In my earlier posting, I basically stated that Passion - a movie of similar cinematic quality as Brokeback (as described on this review site) - was snubbed by the powers that be in Hollywood, and how I felt that was due to political correctness.
Never did I say that homosexuals were bad or were sinners or were hated by God, or that I hated them. Never did I say that Christians are somehow better than other people. Never did I say that this movie should not have been made. Will I see this movie? Probably not. Should other people see this movie? Thats each individuals choice. We live in a free country. That was not my intention. I was simply making a statement regarding the fact that a wonderful (highly successful movie, I might add) was ignored. Thats it. How all the other things suddenly got wrapped up in it, I dont know. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/23/2005A review of Brokeback Mountain by Anonymous A couple of reviews down, anka expresses her(?) disappointment that the physical aspects (the consistent chemistry) of the relationship between Ennis and Jack are depicted so sparingly, and faults the movie for this supposed omission. But even for those of us living in Los Angeles, the enforced distance (societally created, but then purposefully self-imposed) is an all too accurate aspect of living as member of the sexual-orientation minority in the world of the sexual-orientation majority.
Ennis and Jacks wild passion for each other is kept as tightly contained as they can possibly manage --- until they cant --- and then it explodes. This is spot-on accurate.
The equivalent of this very principle plays out every day on streets like Wilshire Boulevard, where opposite-sex couples routinely greet each other with a hug and a kiss, and then nonchalantly walk hand-in-hand down the street --- while their same-sex brethren would not dare do the same (thereby containing as little as this, on account of precisely the same societal pressures as those felt by Ennis and Jack --- even in Los Angeles).
Yes, there is a street in LA where this doesnt happen, but its just a one-mile stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard, out of the tens of thousands of paved miles in the metropolitan area. And while same-sex couples can express their chemistry when away from the streets of LA, Ennis and Jack are so terribly conflicted that they cant even do this.
So kudos to Ang Lee for getting this element of story so unflinchingly right --- and every other aspect of the story as well. Was this review helpful? It simply does not interest me. However, just because I am a christian and this movie carries no interest for me whatsoever does not mean I hate gay people or would judge someone who saw this movie and liked it. My place is not to judge. I think God loves us all, will forgive us and is a loving merciful God. Was this review helpful? It is sad that many people who carry traditional religion beliefs spread hatred against homosexuality.
As the current society has problems that need to be focus on such as high divorce rate among heterosexual couple, domestic violence in this world(It hurts me as I see one of the movie review posts that glorifies SAW2 as far more superior movie and enjoyable movie when compare with bbm).
Despite all these problems, yet people choose to pick up on Homosexuality to go against and to hate. I have great wonderful friends that are homosexual, and know family whose son and daughter are homosexual and yet they are all just like the rest of heterosexuals and they want to love god , but mankind has yet interpret god as hating homosexuality....
People of the current world please wake up...!!! Just like we did in the past when we were thinking that women werent as superior as man, black men werent doom to be slave (It was interpreted via the bible that way by the European). We need to wake up!! And spread love and acceptance to people of different race and sexual preferences! As we are all human, and we shall love as one instead of hate!!! It wont do any good to live with hatred!!! Was this review helpful? Sign In 46 out of 74 users found this helpful Posted: 12/23/2005A review of Brokeback Mountain by michaanna I was apprehensive about seeing Brokeback Mountain and ready to leave the theater if it did not live up to expectation. The subject of a gay love story is not an issue but more of an attraction. I am a closet romantic, I believe in LOVE . That the movie is supposed to be a barrier-breaking love story, portraying a gay relationship honestly, and be of high caliber, was just too good to be true.
The subject is inspiring. The story, endearing and enduring. The romance lives up to expectations and being a gay love story, so does the ending. Its social parameter and the restrictions that people place on themselves in order to survive society. The angst is well portrayed. Truly a love story to be appreciated by all.
However it lacked consistent chemistry between Ennis and Jack. Based on all the award nominations, I expected to be able to taste the love they felt , I wanted the need they felt for each other to emanate consistently when they were together or apart, it didnt. There were sporadic moments where the facade that Ennis and Jack put up for society, or for each other, fell away. Moments I could feel how much they wanted to break past Ennis fear of crossing social boundaries and how precious the little time they spent together truly was.
However, one of the most touching moment in the movie , was when Ennis finally met Jacks parents. The interaction between Ennis and Jacks mother made the movie. The few almost wordless minutes between these two people who loved Jack made me feel sorry for Jack angry at the ignorance of Society and unable to forgive Ennis for forcing Jack and himself to live a lie by giving in to societys standards until it was too late. These few minutes toward the end of the movie made the movie worth seeing and I am grateful that walking out on the movie was not a choice that I had to make. Was this review helpful? Sign In 52 out of 78 users found this helpful Posted: 12/22/2005A review of Brokeback Mountain by Mattagogo I went to see this film because of the current hype its receiving along with the most Golden Globe nominations for a film this year. I saw this a few days ago and trust me its still haunts me. The score is erie and dream like. A love story unfolds lustfully then leads to a passionate love but because of society and there own up bringing they are forced to stay apart. I held back from cryin in the theatre but still down about it. In fact had a tear in my eye just listening to the soundtrack. Its an awesome movie in the way it moves you. I hope this film changes so many minds. Its a shame if it doesnt. I believe this film will win the Oscar for best picture. And for all those that oppose homosexuality. This film covers the course of 20 years. Id hate for anyone to assume that these two men were just lusting after each other. Seems to me that a move several years won best picture. The two lead characters fall in love the same day the ship sinks. Think Titanic if thats not lust I dont know what is. Brokeback Mountain is a film about love and loss and so much more. The raw emotion evoked many feelings with in me. The obvious love that burned within both of them, yet knowing it could never be, because of society then and even now. Why cant some of you people just understand that a white woman and a gorilla could love each other. I hope many of you go see this movie and see that gorillas can love a human. Ive watched the original and all the remakes and cried every time the beast was killed and ask myself why did they have to kill him. Is it just human conditioning to kill that which is out of the ordinary? Are we so unhappy with our own lives that we cant stand to see two creatures happy and in love? With so many humans on this planet did we really have to deny one woman her gorilla? Beauty didnt kill the beast, the evil which lives in man did. Throughout history men have destroyed everything that is beautiful. Opps, wrong movie review. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/22/2005A review of Brokeback Mountain by Anonymous Director Ang Lee exposed our vulnerability to Love. A power that is stronger than the evils of society and religion, it is bestowed upon humans to keep for all eternity. This power testifies of a force that transcends life itself, race, creed and even gender, rendering carnal desires null.
Never mind the accuracy of all the details, right down to the Wyoming-cowboy shy demeanor of Ledger, to the breath taking cinematography and lighting, the film conveys everything it intends. In spite of absurd human moral codes and laws, everyone can love. Love is the only thing we can take from this life. Love is the only thing we leave.
Any thing less would mean we came through this life, and we did not get it. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Sign In 24 out of 42 users found this helpful Posted: 12/22/2005A review of Brokeback Mountain by BEBITO428 I have been emotionally touched and totally absorbed by the characters of this film. I have not fel this way about a movie in a long long time. This story has kept me sobbing for the past 3 days since I watched the movie, but I still keep coming back to MSN and watch the railers and cry as I am watching it. The director did a fabulous job with this story, I have not seen so many women cry through the whole movie as I have seen at this one. I felt once I left the movie theater that I could find my true love or significant other, but then I have come back to reality. I have dated straight menbefore and I have been caught almost in the same situation but at the end I always came out being alone since I couldnt face the fact that I was about to wreck a home, not happy but still a home. I hope more people go and see this movie and learn to appreciate the meaning of love and passion, because this movie shows it all. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
