If you are willing to boot yourself out of the instant grab you with a smashing action scene and then lull you to the end movie then rent this one. I was totally intertained and watched it twice to catch the subtle nuances. I go to the video store to find movies like this. A diamond in the rough. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful This film has cheap sets, poor lighting, and marginal acting, to go along with a dull script. I fought to stay awake during this frankly overrated piece of film noir. At no point do any of the characters engage you with their lives, travails, angst, or anything else. Save your money. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful So what is the skinny on Brick, the independent film noir, murder mystery that took Sundance by storm? Well, it could quite possibly be one of my favorite films of this year. It is good. In fact, it is damn good. 2006 has been an interesting year as far as theatrical releases go. Just about all of my favorite films have been smaller, genre driven pictures. Perhaps the best thing Brick has going for it is it feels entirely fresh. It is one of those smaller pictures that if you are able to track down in one of those sticky floored art houses you will feel like you are discovering your own piece of cinematic treasure. You wont see this one coming it literally hits you, well, like a ton of bricks...

I enjoyed it very much. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 2 users found this helpful I found the meshing of the Film Noir style and high school quite annoying. On one hand the concept and characters are so silly on the other hand it doesnt seem like Rian Johnson wants you to find them laughable. There were no captivating issues but the execution was interesting and original. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 3/28/2006A review of Brick by Charles1030 It might not make sense at first, but its about time the dark, seedy underworld of the detective noir was transferred to high school. Rian Johnsons stylish Brick places all the elements of the classic film noir, from the femme fatale to the no-nonsense authority figure (the vice principal, of course) in a cinematic portrait of disenchanted wise guys who have to borrow their parents car to execute their complex plans. With brilliant dialogue out of the 1940s and graceful visuals that add depth to the dark comedy, Johnson debuts with a smart, self-assured feature that portrays adolescence like no other film has. Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 4 users found this helpful Film Noir can find its roots in the works of writers like Raymond Chandler, and the young characters in this movie achieve those desperate and heroically hardened likenesses better than any in recent memory. The longer scenes involving a single take from one camera are true to the genre and the cinematographer makes exquisite use of shadow, light and air texture. Beautiful movie. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful This was the best of the 10 films I saw at Sundance 05. The language is exceedingly creative. Its a sort of a fast-paced, generation-Y jive. I cant honestly say that I understood every word, but that was part of the fun. Youll perch forward, one ear cocked, trying to keep up with the protagonists discoveries. The girls are gorgeous and theres plenty of wry humor for balance. True to film noir tradition, the cinematography is inventive but classic. The characters are sharp and cool and the plot moves well--youll love the twists. There are even scenes with audio effects so powerful that youll study the credits for the Sound Engineers name.
A must for anyone looking to douse themselves with a refreshing bucket of creativity. Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 14 users found this helpful Posted: 2/6/2006A review of Brick by mermaid489 this movie looks sooooo good. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-10 of 10 Per Page | ||
