I graduated from highschool in 1976. I thought this movie got a grasp on many elements from that time. I loved the music, the dialog, the main charactors and some of the mini sub stories that filtered in and out of the main theme. Especially the scene where a drug deal goes terribly wrong. That was the best scene in the movie. I still feel that the director mined the creepiest, seediest , elements of that time and over capitalized it for shock value. In the end, you just feel icky. Watch it , but perhaps not with your mom and dad, or kids, or grandparents,,,, maybe just lock yourself in the bathroom and watch it alone. Then buy the music Cd and sing Jessies Girl and Mamma told me not to come , while you are driving down the freeway.

When someone reads about this film on the back of the case or off the internet, the one word that stands out from the rest is porn, therefore most people conclude that the film is trash, it should have never been made, and they wonder what kind of people would make a film like this(and the cover doesn't help contradict that). But if one were to watch the movie for themselves, they would find that they are drawn into the lives of these people, and they realize that these people are actually human beings who have lives, regrets, struggels, and dreams like all people. The film mainly portrays the rise and fall, and rise again of a porn-actor Eddie Adams, later changed to Dirk Diggler. But Writer-Director Paul Thomas Anderson takes perfect amounts of time out to unfold the lives of each character in the film, and one cannot help but feel for them through their struggles. Although the second half of the film can't keep the intensity as it did in the first half, it certainly doesn't fall and never recover. The film also proves that their should be an award for best ensemble cast in a film, for all the acting is so great. Overall, Boogie Nights is a powerful peice of filmmaking that you'll never be able to forget.

I never thought I would enjoy a movie based on the porno business, however, this movie was much much more than just sex on show. I have no idea why, but it hit home it many ways, mostly through the relationships and conflicted characters. It is a must see, if you can abide the nudity and soft porn.<br>
