All too well do I remember this event as my parents were living in that East Texas region at that time. It brought back flashbacks of all of the news accounts and the stories associated with this event. The docu-drama format worked very well as the constant ongoing interviews with the many Carthage townfolk added so much to the storyline.
The casting was absolutely great as everyone did a superlative job. No actor other than Black could have pulled off the portrayal of Tiede, and MacLaine was fabulous as the rich old miserly lady. Matthew MacConaughey did a great job as the local DA. The only minus I saw was that the actual defense attorney for Tiede was a barrister of unheralded proportions for East Texas, known for his flamboyant style, courtroom theatrics, and his often brutal "take-no-prisoners-approach" to his cross-examination of witnesses.
It was truly refreshing to take a small step back in time to revisit this true story and to once again find myself enveloped in those East Texas pines and the people who make up that endearing part of my state.
This is a film that should be liked by most everyone who embraces Texana and loves all things of a Texan nature. Was this review helpful? This is a totally entertaining and engaging story in the "truth is stranger than fiction" genre; only in Texas can a story like this happen. I loved this movie. Was this review helpful?
