HOW REFRESHING Was this review helpful? The dependence of privileged young people on the "allowances" from rich relatives, the struggles of the poor and middle classes, and the clearly delineated and socially dictated differences between the two really rang true for me in this movie. While the story might have been more engaging had it been entirely based on the factual life of Jane Austen, it was still an interesting and heartbreaking tale that may have occurred in these times and very much seemed to be the kind of experience that might have provided subtext and insight into the writings of Jane Austen.
I thought the acting by all was excellent and the various characters very much in keeping with my expectations for the time period.
If this film is judged not to be of the same quality of the past movies based on Ms Austen's novels, all one should need to know is that it wasn't written by Jane! Was this review helpful? There was very little notation on the life of Jane regarding her family, relocations throughout her life, publishing history, social obstacles nor even her illness. Becoming Jane was portrayed mainly as a romance story, not the entire picture of Jane Austen becoming who she was as a writer. Even the romance history is questionable at best. Very poorly done film with no credibility having half the cast being American and the other half being British. Jane had an American accent one moment and a British accent the next. Deplorable choice for a famous British writer. Jane Austen was British and should have been cast as such. If you go to all the trouble to make a film look authentic to the period then you must cast actors from the same country and not try to make Americans look British. It will never work and it did not in this film. I did not for one minute believe Jane was the one and only Jane Austen. This film has done dishonor to one of the most brilliant authors in all of history!!! This film will definitely NOT be in my Jane Austen collection. Was this review helpful? Ann Hathaway is simply not that pretty. Her eyes are so black and flat, without expression. He hair was also black and lifeless. Okay, okay, that's the way it was back then...no running water...but who wants to see that today? I thought the sexual inuendo with the parents in the beginning was so wrong on so many levels. The movie was dark and dirty and depressing. A total bummer from my point of view. Was this review helpful? There is a great deal that is not known about the personal life of Jane Austin, but historians have speculated for years based on the bits and pieces that are known. Nothing in the movie contradicted what I have previously read about her life--merely a bit of creative license, based, as I say on historical speculation. This is quite the norm for movies of this kind, so I don't understand the negative reviews I've read. The dialog is very well written with a real ring of authenticity, the settings very realistic, the actors very well suited to their parts--although I have not been prejudiced by seeing the other recent works of these particular actors as some people seem to have been.
I can see that to people who have dined on a regular diet of movies thick with action and thin on substance might find it slow and boring. But to anyone with a genuine appreciation of the real works of Jane Austin (and by that I mean the books, not the movies--and I've read them all) this movie is a true delight. The thourough development of the characters and the careful pacing of the movie were very satisfying. The interwoven events (even if fictionalized) that could very well have been the basis of her subsequent novels only add to the appeal of the movie and the poignancy of the conclusion. Knowing the outcome of her life as I did, did not prevent me from enjoying this movie.
I highly recommend this movie and can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can add it to my collection of movies that I will enjoy over and over again. Was this review helpful? While we are both very fond of this type of movie, Becoming Jane did not match up to the standards of such films as Pride and Predjudice. It was just plain awful. Was this review helpful? I loved Ann Hathaway...but had just seen Last King of Scotland the day before....so, it was hard to reconcile the lead in this movie with that of the doctor in King....Still, I liked it pretty well and would do it again. Amazing to see how people lived in the late 1700's. However, upon learning more about Jane after the movie..the romance was played to the max, where history does not support that view.
