Date ![]() Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful this movie is awful. Maybe you have to read the book first, but the "repercussions" of the false accusation are not really shown. Did he go to prison? For how long? How did he get out in time to go to war? It's just one of those movies that doesn't explain itself and leaves the viewer wondering what is going on at all times. Not to mention BORING. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 6/2/2008A review of Atonement by KatrinaB09 I loved this film. Maybe it's because of the time in my life - trying to finish a doctoral degree and the agony of that process - that it spoke to me, but nonetheless the tragedy and hope of the story is so compelling I couldn't help but let it in. I'm going to read the book when I go off on my post-degree vacation in two weeks. I'm looking forward to having the visual images of the film running in my head as I read. Thanks to the amazing actors and the director for their talents in telling this story and showing how flawed we are as human beings. Very memorable. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 2 users found this helpful I read the book first and then waited for the movie to come out on dvd to watch it. It was worth the wait! This is the best movie based on a book that I have ever seen. The cinematography was beautiful, acting incredible and the end is a haunting twist which matches the mood of the entire film. I highly recomend this film if you love movies. Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 2/25/2008A review of Atonement by blessidunionchick I've read several reviews of this movie and had convinced myself that I would be thoroughly dissappointed by it, however it turned out to be the best movie I've ever seen. Everything about the movie is perfect. The plot line is twisted, the characters are beautifully flawed, and the story is heart wrenching. Maybe it's not the type of movie that you would want to see over and over because it evokes the most horrid human emotions, but it is definitely the most powerful piece of art I have ever come in contact with. I, too, expected it to be a great love story, but was pleasantly surprised by the ending. The story is REAL, even if it is fiction. The acting is phenominal by everyone. I can't go on enough about how perfect this movie is. There is nothing that I would have changed or that I wish would be different. It definitely deserves to be Best Picture of the Year, if not of all time. Was this review helpful? It had wonderful costumes. Beautiful scenery. But was lost what the story was about until the very end. I just couldn't believe it got best picture!!! I can see why it didn't make much money. Well, that I guess was the undertone. There was a little bit of the actual romance at the start of the movie, the rest - very dark, depressing. I kept waiting for it to get better, but at the end, was just left with a hopelessness. Definately not a feel good movie. I also didn't like the way the movie flip flopped back and forth from past to present. To end this review on a good note - the acting was superb. Was this review helpful? Sign In 4 out of 6 users found this helpful My girlfriend dragged me to this movie...and I had to wake her up no less than half a dozen times.
I counted eleven people leave the theatre while the movie was playing...and not return.
One of the most dramatic parts (I'm guessing) was when a soldier was dying and speaking to the protagonist's sister.
Unfortunately, I can't say for sure just how dramatic this scene was because the entire dialogue was spoken in French without subtitles.
I knew my money (and my time) would've been better spent watching Rambo. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful It surprises me to see the reviews posted, i waited until this weekend to see the movie as I had read so many poor reviews. It was excellent, so well acted and the period was well done. Accents were still very understandable which is sometimes an issue for me. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Oh my God! What was this? This is the worst movie I have seen in 6 months; I almost walked out of the theatre and demanded my money back. I loved Pride and Prejudice and was excited about seeing the next Joe Write directed film, but I was utterly disappionted. This film was depressing, and distracting (time frame bouncing all over the place). McAvoy was fantastic, but everything else about this film, was bad, bad, bad. The story was hardly believeable. Who would believe a story of a 12 year old without questioning adults, please. Don't waste your money. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 4 users found this helpful I haven't see this moive, and I love those long epic romantic, sad, historic, "english patient" type of a movies. However, having heard that Keira whatever her last name is, is in the movie, it just spoiled it for me. I cannot act, and she cannot act. And I don't call myself an actress, she, unfortunatally, does.
I don't think she's ugly, but pretty is far fetched for her, and beautiful she's not. Who can seriously compare her to any beautiful women, such Halle Berry, Catherina Zeta Jones, Charlise Theron....etc, etc...
She represents everything that is so fake and wrong with today's perception of so called beauty, that is not, here in North America.
So, it's very hard to ignore the fact that she is playing character that is beautiful, smart, anything....because she cannot act, nor represent all these things that the character has.
This is not personal attack on her, just her acting skills, which are pretty sad. Plus, it's hard to picture beautiful woman, when you're looking at some pre-adolesence looking boy. I could ignore the looks, if good acting was present. That is one big MUST if your profession is an actress.
I wont' dare to watch this one though, even with fine actor as the McEvoy is. Too bad. Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 2 users found this helpful Posted: 1/7/2008A review of Atonement by Juicey4607 My wife picked this movie due to the reviews. First the good.....the acting was excellent and the cinematography was top drawer. Typical with English movies, the plot develpment moved at glacial speed. Guys, do not expect any car chases. There were some WWII war scenes, but they were just to punctuate the utter hell the wrongly accused protagonist , Robbie, had to go through.
The plot could be described in a four sentence simple paragraph. With that said, this movie is well done as a piece of art, it is just not my cup of tea or entertainment for that matter. My wife love it, so the night was not a total loss. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 1/2/2008A review of Atonement by movieluvr8 The best way I can describe the movie is a bunch of snap shots, like a slide show on a computer. The movie has a plot but it doesn't move or flow. It's like one minute you're here and the next boom you're four years later, then boom 3 weeks earlier. What happens in between that. You don't get to see it, you're told what happens. It just felt like a slide show on a computer to me. The scenery is brilliant and the story idea is good, it's just poorly executed. If they gave a little more detail the movie would've flowed better. It was also slow especially in the beginning Over all ok, but nothing to write home about. I did laugh at one point, but only because someone had fallen asleep and was snoring loudly.
