Saw the movie today with my 5-yr-old daughter and 9-yr-old son. Daughter cried (sobs) 2-3 times during the movie. The son in the movie (Toby) is killed (by accident) by his own (somewhat neglectful) Dad in the beginning. Dad then throws replacement robot son (Astro) out of the house. Then a surrogate dad tries to have Astro killed too! The poor hero cannot catch a break. Too much for a kid movie? Yeah, we thought so too. Movie has a lot of loud action, fight-type scenes also. Even 9-yr-old thought they were a bit much. Overall, our family gave it four thumbs down. Wish we would have spent the money on another flick.

I grew up watching the original Japanese cartoons on TV when they were shown in black and white and they were all dubbed in the Spanish language, and it was great seeing Astro in color and in English. Astroboy is a true hero in this movie and shows heart, compassion and heroism in this movie. Furthermore, he puts his friends first and above all else, even above himself, especially when they're in mortal danger. This isn't just a movie about a robot who looks like a boy, who also has super powers and super strength, but about trust, loyalty, and character. It's a classic super-hero origin story, where the boy-hero searches for his purpose and seeks to discover why he was made, and tries to find out what his destiny is. I think that just makes for a wonderful story, with unforgettable characters which come together at a crucial time in their lives. The chase scenes are breath-taking and the fight scenes are amazing. Astroboy is a true hero in everything he does, just like in the original cartoon. Truly, this is one I will buy when it comes out on DVD. I love the characters and I just loves seeing an old favorite hero back on the big screen. I hope today's kids will appreciate it as much as those of us, who watched Astro over twenty years ago on TV. Go see Astroboy!

Although I was skeptical about taking my three children (aged 2, 3 & 6), I decided to take what I viewed as a 'calculated risk' and throw caution to the wind. I'd read other reviews about the film being too 'dark', and subsequently adult - but I'm glad to report that I didn't experience any such thing. Astroboy, an American-adaptation of a Japanese classic manga has everything that any great kids movie should have...almost. All the right ingredients are there, they've been mixed accordingly - but I can't help but feel that someone forgot to preheat the oven. The movie has heart - don't get me wrong. The characters are as developed as any children's movie can make them, although slightly 2-dimensional due to Imagi's poor CGI...and they propell the story forward nicely. Unfortunately there's something missing - you don't know what...but you can't shake the feeling that either the budget ran dry, or the screenwriter's latte allowence. But all that aside...what Astroboy gets right - he does so with flying colors. My children loved this movie. The character of Astro (voiced authentically by Freddie Highmore) is a protagonist you easily get behind. The Boy-Robot's story of self-discovery among the towering skyscrapers of Mega City is one that appeals to all ages. There really aren't enough heroes that our children can get behind these days, since Marvel & DC are now looking to the older crowd...and I for one am glad for the breath of fresh air that Astroboy's 'Positive Energy' provides. In closing - Astroboy's not going to win any Academy-Awards, and should you enter the movie theatre with the same expectation you would for one of Pixar's classics - prepare for disappointment. Astroboy's not going to win any trophies... But he may win your heart ;)
