I liked this movie. Never read the book, so I cannot compare it to that. However, compared to the usual Hollywood action-pack dribble and tvs endless addiction to reality shows, this was very entertaining. Both actors are beautiful people, so the love scenes were sexy and believable. I also liked the period customs and cityscapes. The movie does have a golden color tone to it, which gives it a noir feel. All in all, sitting on my couch watching it alone without the usual irritations of a movie theatre, I thought it was good entertainment. I will watch it again.

I agree with the MSN reviewer- visually this is a pleasing movie but the story is boring and we never emotionally connect with these characters. And then to finish the relationship question by having her die- how simple and blah. After half the DVD was finished I was ready to turn it off but my wife wanted to see the end of it. After the movie she said, What was that movie about? I didnt understand much of the dialogue. She has her Masters in Literature! I thought at the end when the main character couldnt find the grave and he tosses his book into the desert- yeh! Do the same with this DVD.

What a dissappointing, cliched, piece of tripe. A woman in the Depression era stripping naked to frolic in the surf with a near stranger? The stereotypes of Dark Women as both sex crazed and pitifully weak are exploited in this film without any apology or hint that this might be a critique of cultural inequalities rather than a glorification of them. If there was any intention of offering some social commentary, it was lost in the vaseline lens quality of the cinematography and the romanticised portrayals of the characters. Suspension of disbelief was truly impossible. The movie was so bad I wanted to leave, but some train wreck syndrome kept me in my seat, laughing at all the poignant moments and how predictable they were. A fine comedy, all in all, though I imagine it wasnt supposed to be one.

The film is faithful to the books tone of dark ache and much of its detail and for the most part terrifically cast. But Towne cant overcome an essential challenge of the material Arturo and Camilla are constructs and ciphers as much as they are vivid characters -- difficult roles, to be sure. Neither the screenplay nor the actors manage to get far under their skin. Highlighted by a strong and sensual performance from Salma Hayek as the doomed heroine, elegant pics muted quality and the central characters vexingly contrary behavior will keep auds from connecting with characters who themselves have trouble establishing bonds. I didnt like it.

I haven't yet seen the movie as it is only now being filmed, yet I do know a bit about Colin Farrell....
This filmed is being filmed at a high school, converted into a set, in Pinelands, Cape Town, South Africa.
Colin Farrell has slept with just about every girl over the age of 18 (and to his knowledge or not I don't know, but a few under the age of 18 as well) in Cape Town. I go to Varsity on monday mornings and hear, from the girls in my class, of the latest weekend exploits of CF, friends of there's who were at such and such a party with him, friends of theirs who happened to sleep with him this week, etc, etc.
I don't appreciate someone coming into Cape Town, using the people here and thinking they can get away with it because they're a name from Tinseltown.
Go back coz really, if you think you're doing us a favour by coming in here and showing us what stuffed up morals you have, then we really don't want you.
I think actors & actresses are awesome people, to be able to take on the role of anyone and act as if it is totally you is amazing, but really, some of you need a reality check...you're not the be all and end all of life and yes, what you do, and how you act when you're in my country certainly does have an effect on the people here. So watch yourselves.
