Date  Helpful Rating 0 out of 0 users found this helpful  Unrealistic Predictable Disaster MoviePosted: 5/12/2008A review of Armageddon by Lancelot-429 The script is well known to all after so many years of TV & DVD presentations of this predictable movie. As a member of the aerospace community and as a cinephile, I agree with the professional critics, this movie is terrible. Special effects of meteorites & space action do have some merit for the times it was released but the script is so predictable, unrealistic and sadly enough pretty typical of the director. The story follows a band of misfit drilling workers (probably "normal" in an oil drilling operation somewhere in TX) that teach NASA's best engineers & scientist how to save the earth. Sadly enough, many spectators interviewed in the theater did believe that our aerospace scientists were that boresighted if not stupid! Willis & Company (of course) do not need the discipline, knowledge and rigorous selection process that separate astronauts from the rest of the population and siimply "walk into" the challenge. Add to that the "to be expected" misunderstood love story between the bosses daughter and the nicest looking guy in the crew and you have the perfect receipe for a financial blockbuster (especially in the US) and a forgettable production. The action was intense, and the story was gripping, if you allowed yourself to ignore some of the plot sacrifices, i have to admit, i'm usually not very emotional during movies, but i cried around the end of this one, especially when (spoilers if you haven't seen it) Harry decideds to stay behind instead of AJ, and he's telling his daughter that he won't be coming home, it was very sad and moving... (end of spoilers) But you will laugh through your tears as there are some very memorable moments and quotes from this movie, such as "This place is like Dr.Seuss's worst nightmare" I never stop laughing from that one no matter how many times i here it. This movie is an unrelenting rollercoaster from the first minute of the film, You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll have on hell of a time with this one, i definitly recommend you either pick it up or rent it. Something supernatural like this happening is not totally un-likely, but the chances are quite slim. I really believe that if the directors and producers had wanted to "reel" a better croud in, they would have made the scenery more believable and the special effects much more enhanced. Most of this movie was situated tightly on the stupid romance Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck had. The two "love-birds" turned this movie into a semi-chick flick movement, when in reality an enormous comet was supposed to wipe out the earth. Honestly guys, stick to what's worth seeing, the plot. If I had wanted to see a chick flick, I would have stayed home and watched For Keeps? with my sister. Was this review helpful? It got to be THE most unrealistic movie I have ever seen in my life. Yet it is still a good movie. It is greatly entertaining and is a movie you can watch over and over again. If you ignore that the plot could never happen, its a good movie. You will laugh, cry, and feel your head spin. Perhaps another mistake is Ben Afflek since his acting is kind of like what came out of me this morning and dropped into the toilet. However, Bruce Willis redeems the acting back again. The extended version is even better. The dialogue is snappy, the entire cast have a dynamic relationship. You will laugh through your tears. A must see if you by some quirk in life haven't already. The soundtrack is a great mix, the action and effects believeable, all in all, a great flick. This is one you buy with a back up for when you use up the first 500 viewings. Was this review helpful?
