Brando is better than he was originally reviewed. Watch for Martin Sheens descent into madness. It isnt a war movie as much as it is a movie about madness and how we perceive it.
Move over Citizen Kane. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 1 users found this helpful Posted: 7/2/2004A review of Apocalypse Now by Atheistboyandproud Good movie, highly recommended. One of the most realistic war movies ever (my instructer named it the only realistic war movie). Almost as good as Platoon. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 12/28/2003A review of Apocalypse Now by Anonymous I saw "Apocalypse Now" 25 times during its original release to theatres. It %&*^s the viewer into its nightmare like no other film, making a truly profound cinematic experience.

"Apocalypse" features a morally ambiguous protagonist in Willard, but Sheen's performance transcends the script. He creates a character that personifies all the ways that Americans themselves were divided and conflicted by the Vietnam War. The battle sequences are visually astounding and layered with irony, and underscore the fact that the US could never "win" the war without depopulating the entire country. The Kurtz monologue at the end, so masterfully delivered by Brando, summarizes the dilemma faced by US forces.

The sheer technical prowess and technique exhibited by Coppola and his crew, especially cinematographer Zsigmond, is mind-boggling. The opening montage of Sheen, napalm, and "The Doors" is one of the classic sequences in film history. The helicopter attack puts the viewer right in the battle. The musical score, especially as the PT boat approaches the Kurtz compound, works beautifully with the visual element, as do the rock songs of the era.

I much prefer the original edit to the "Redux" version. Coppola's passion for the project in 1978 led him to instinctively make the right cuts. "Redux" breaks up the relentless, inexorable pacing of the trip up river, and the film, IMHO, loses a lot of its power. Was this review helpful? Who rank's these movies? Where is Platoon ranked, and from my experience in the armed force's Blackhawk down was probably the most accurate. Dont get me wrong, the movies listed are great movies, but I still would like to know who ranks these. Just check out the top 10 comicbook to movie rankings....GHOSTWORLD????! The storyline is supurb, and the acting excellent. The surreal battle scenes give one the sense of suspended animation while watching. Like being in a fog. I do not rate this as the number one war movie on my list because of the special mission type that it represents, however it does get a 5 on my list. Was this review helpful? Music, Cinematography, acting, direction..........everything is amazing. Coppola might have set out to create a true work of art, and as imperfect as Appocalypse now is, it manges to achieve statue as a GREAT piece of cinematic art. Threee hours well spent!!!!! Few movies can do this. The music, cinematography, and other effects do a great job of setting the desired mood. Was this review helpful? The visuals in this movie are incredible. It is big, large and swallows you up. Best seen on as big a screen as you can with full sound up. You will feel you are there. Was this review helpful?
