I caught this film, and feel it is so moving and true to family life;Parents sometimes try to live out their lives through their children, when they should just allow them Freedom and space to grow up.Adele August(Sarandon) packs up her daughter Ann(Portman) and leaves her husband for sunny California. In many respects,Adele tries to be "buddy buddy" with her daughter, but instead strangles and smothers her. To me,a mom like that would be flaky and "off the wall" crazy. The saddest scene is hearing Ann cry on the phone to daddy. This "creep" never saw her in 8 years,so that makes him a Dog,like many deadbeat dads are.In telling him off,she said that he wasted his life and missed a chance to be a great parent. The hardest thing a parent realizes,is that a child must be let go to "fly the Coop", as they say.Moving away,at college time,is the smartest thing Ann chooses;I felt it is wise to tell her mom straight out how she felt. After she enbarrasses her friends,Ann realizes her mom is "not kosher" and strange. At the end,Adele realizes letting go is the smartest decision she could make. I offer Bravo to Portman and Sarandon for a truly memorable and awesome performance!

I like this movie because it shows a mother-daughter relationship that isn't sugar coated. It shows you a relationship that is real, cause let's face us girls don't all get along w/ our mother's!
