It wasnt your typical mushy romance comedy, it was a story about life. The characters are truly inspirational. Pretty good acting, and the story is realistic. Overall, I gave it a thumbs up! I feel like yelling Enough already! , I know the whole plot is based on the fact that he son was killed and Robert Redfords character blames the accident on Jennifer Lopezs character, but theres only so many times I can stand to hear my boy is dead and its all your fault. I cant wait to see where this enchanting young lady will go as an actress. Redford and Freeman are hilarious together. Both of these veterans show that they've still got the fire, and are as captivating as ever. This is an odd part for Jen but she holds her own here. Its also great to see her reaching for the heart of the dramatic arts, assuredly tremendous growth as an artist and actress will come of her turn in an Unfinished Life. There are no special effects here, it takes a quiet set of eyes to truely appreciate this feature. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 10/3/2005A review of An Unfinished Life by Anonymous This was one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time. It took me on a personal ride and struck a cord that grabbed me emotionally more than most movies have ever done; which is rare for me and my imperturbable character.
This is a story about tragedy and forgiveness. The characters to include the Bear are all intertwined with life's paths crossing, and relationships that are deep in love and in hatred. Einar (Mr. Redford) hates Jean (J. LO) as he blames her for his son's death. Jean is abused by her boyfriend, and she and her daughter played by Becca Gardner (very good child actor, who sold me all the way) run away from the abusive situation and head from the Midwest back to Einar's ranch in Wyoming. She is not welcome, but the grandchild Einar did not know existed until she showed up one day, works magic; the magic grandchildren do. Mitch (Morgan Freeman), has his own issues to solve, as he was mauled by a Grizzly who returns to this ranch at the same time Jean shows up. How he deals with the Bear is another story, but 'same' nonetheless.
All the story line above cannot paint the emotions and passion of this story, so elegantly executed by Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman. This is J. Lo's best performance to date. This along with cinematography that is so, SO grand in scope and beauty; not unlike many of Mr. Redford's movies! The Western scenes made me feel very homesick for Colorado, and also made me feel the mood of such settings. It is a roller coaster ride with great acting right up front leading the way. This movie does not use cliche's such as a twist, or confusing story lines...but does it with pure quality of content and visual story telling!!!
I give this movie my highest recommendation for those who would appreciate a throw back movie, where the movie stands on it's own merits. The movie seems to end so quickly as it grabs you that deeply, and you wish it would not end.

Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Lopez were great. I had never thought J-Lo could really act before, but this came across as natural and real. The sceenery was great, and the movie touches almost every age group on some level. We would see it again in a heartbeat. The little girl who plays Jennifers daughter is a cutie and a natural actress. We thought Cammeron Manheim was believable as Jean's friend, and the small town people look like they came out of a small town. Great story that holds your attention, and catches you up in the story line. Was this review helpful? I thought about it on the way home and called my parents to telll them they had to see it....there aren't many movies like this anymore.
I noticed that it was mostly older people who had come to see it..but I am only 40 and my husband and I both would go see it again in a heartbeat. It is sad that some of the film industries best actors are so far along in age..I grew up with Robert Redford and Paul Newman, and of course Clint Eastwood, so for me it was bitter-sweet seeing Robert getting along in age.
I think this has replaced my all-time favorite movie. This movie teaches you about forgiveness and living a full liife, and that is refreshing for once. Was this review helpful? The message of forgiveness to one and all, while certainly admirable, was done in such a hokey way. . .
And JLo's old boyfriend, why did he have to come back a SECOND time? Nothin' else to do in this movie.
Robert Redford's not all that grizzly or disgruntled. Too bad he didn't come on to his ex-daughter-in-law, JLo, maybe that would've been entertaining. As it was, didn't she have any of her OWN family to look up? She had to go to live with her EX-father-in-law???? Oh, right, so there'd be a theme.
Morgan Freeman and the bear--that was intriguing and kind of spiritual. And he is so meaningful with little dialogue.
White bread sandwiches, come on, what about some hearty bread and some elk roast??? Cowboy food?
So, the movie was limited, and Hallmark Material, and will be lauded because someone needed a pg-13 movie.
Really, unoriginal, and pablum for the masses. . .
And the cinemaphotography did not even make Wyoming look all that attractive. . .the lake with small stripped mountains in the background : a oft repeated scene. . .no awe-inspired landscapes there. How nice it feels to walk away from a film totally relaxed. A wonderful break. This movie was slow, a good thing, no jolting transitions needed. Sound performaces. When you want what's best for characters, knowing there going be ok, is a fine way to leave theater. Was this review helpful? The story line has enough twists, that it will keep you wondering what will happen to Redford, Freeman, and Lopez. It's predictable, but you have to wait to find out how each charactor deals with their own fate, or how they deal with their loss, choices, mistakes and future.
The set it beautiful, the dialog engaging and funny, and you get to go home glad you saw it. Was this review helpful? Robert Redford still delivers an amazing performance, Morgan Freeman is perfect, Jennifer Lopez continues to surprise, and Becca Gardner is incredible! Add beautiful cinematography and great chemistry and you have an incredible film!
You won't be disappointed! Was this review helpful? Sign In 48 out of 52 users found this helpful Posted: 7/3/2005A review of An Unfinished Life by stargazer7770 This movie is a "Piece of Art" in comparison to all the junk that hollywood has given us lately. It actually has a plot, great casting and excellent photography. Redford is still a great actor who beams on the screen with gracious complexity and serenity. Freeman adds a charming magic with his character and Jennifer Lopez excells herself playing a sensitive woman who is desperate to start a new life. She plays such role beautifully, without going "over the top" with disturbing stoicism and drama like Nicole Kidman or Maryl Streep( lately). She plays the role naturally without trying too hard. It is sad that hollywood refuses to knowledge her great acting. I truly hope that the unfair, negative publicity she gets from a few Hollywood "nuts" doesn't kill this great film.
