Could have done without the rape scene, but it did show the reality of prison life. I reccomend this movie and especially to any one who has hate for anybody just because of their race. Cuz in the end he literally gets screwed by his own people. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 3/29/2005A review of American History X by ღCyCiNeღ Wo0ow! I believe in the movie. The prison sequences are very factual. As I have worked in prisons. This movie will make a beliver out of anyone who watches it. It is the best. Was this review helpful? It could have left out a few things. Like the first sex sceane. Play a few noises, the aduance will get the picture. And the rape sceane.
Other than that, it was pretty good. ^^ Was this review helpful? Sign In 3 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 2/11/2004A review of American History X by Strong_Dan1 American History X is one of the most powerful and gripping dramas ever made. The story shows the tragedy of hate and ignorance on both sides of the black/white racial boundary. Narrated posthumously by Daniel Vinyard, the story shows us the hate of white supremicist Derrick Vinyard and how his hate rips not only his world, but his family apart as well. The movie does an excellent job of driving home the old adage that "what goes around, comes around." With an amazing cast, and powerful story line, it's all but impossible to walk away from this movie unmoved and with eyes unopened. Was this review helpful? I think it rings true about the problems and this world, and that they exist. People still worship !(@$~# and they will for a long time. This movie wakes you up about whats happening to the world. Everyone should wake up and watch this movie. Was this review helpful? To say that I was very impressed is an understatement, I was in awe, of the writing, the acting, and the directing. The message of how hate is a never ending cycle that gets the hater no where was incredible. The came full circle so completely, which is rare. The entire cast did a wonderful job, especially Edward Norton. This movie very easily could have come across as being pro-racist, but everything was done so well, that only someone already very pro-racist would have had such limited vison to see only that aspect of the story. Danny's father was the quite kind of person that everyone knows someone like, with his subtle type of racial slurs. We often shrug off people like that and don't really pay very much attention to them or the fact that they are racist, but they lay the groundwork for and perpeuate the beliefs of the more overt type. I couldn't exactly put to words the message that I got from the movie until I took an Old Testament class in college and the professor (also a Baptist preacher) said in a discussion that no matter who we hate or how much we hate them, or why, holding that hate in our hearts only hurts us. Which wasn't 100% true for the characters in this movie, they did hurt others, their own families, the families of the people that they killed, but that hatred hurt them as well. The writers/directors were not afraid to bring to light that racism runs both ways as well. This is admirable. Many people would have only shown the one side of it. I like that there was no favortism to either side. The only movie that I have ever seen with a more conflicted central character so filled with hate was The Beliver. This movie is the most startling visual arguement for peaceful coexistance, if nothing else, I have ever seen. On a lighter note, I have never seen Edward Norton look better. Was this review helpful? Every time i watch it it just inspires me to make others watch it. I will warn them that it will upset them, it upsets me, but it inspires me. There is so much hatered out there in the world, from everyone to everyone else. We might all claim not to be racist or sexist or any ist but we all are. This film brings to a head all our fears, no one looks good, well to be honest no one is. A white, evil guy, kills two black guys, and in a totally evil manner. He goes to prison, rightly so, meets and befriends a black guy who has been wrongly imprisoned, but only in terms of the stretch imparted. The black guy keeps the white guy alive because they have become friends. The white guy gets out and realises the errors of his ways. As a synopsis its sounds like many other happy ending stories. This isn't one of them. This film takes you to scenarios that no other film has done. It tackles illegial immegration, illegal employment and at the start you may empathise with the feelings going on. I know i did. The actions taken there after should instill in you how wrong hatred to others is. For once i have watched a film that doesn't make one race wrong and another right. It makes us all out to be wrong. If ever i have seen a film that inspires me to try to be a good person and treat everone as an equal then this is it. Everyone, of every creed should watch this, it shows the best parts of us all, not too often, but isn't that realistic, and the worst of us, far too common. If only we could all learn get on like the guys do in the latter laundry scenes. I for one know i would live in a happier world if we could be as honest in a group as we are on our own. Watch this film, get the message that ALL racism #^!@s and make others watch. If one of them gets it, hopefully they will do the same as you have just done. Was this review helpful? To some, it may seem violent, right or wrong, but you can't see it without a feeling. When I saw it for the first time, I didn't know exactly what it was about, I just thought that Ed Norton looked great with a goaty, but as the movie went along, I realized that some people might - and would - live what Derek had lived. At first it scared me, but in the end, it gave me hope. Hope that everybody can turn his or her heart. I absolutely recommend it to anyone who doesn't know where he stands when it comes to race, and I believe it can be interpreted for any race. <br> Was this review helpful? I first saw this movie in a film apprecitation class and was caught up in it from the very beginning. I was so moved by the movie, I picked up the video on the way home stopped by a friends house so he could see it. I will always remember the scene with the young African-American and his mouth on the curb and Ed Norton's character killing him by kicking him in the back of the head. INTENSE! But the very hard-to-watch scenes are the ones that give this movie the power that it has to convey its message. This movie packs quite a message to anyone who might watch it. My hope is that those caught up in the rascist life-style will see it and think hard about what they have seen. Was this review helpful? This is one of those movies that you end up watching all the credits at the end because youre completely stunned over what you just witnessed. It is very obsene through its use of violence and language, they held back nothing in creating this movie. This however is neccesary in building the story. Edward Norton gives one of the greatest performances i have ever witnessed. This is a must see movie that will change your perceptions of society, just be sure and prepare yourself. Hard to watch at certain points in it, but very informative and definately makes you think. Norton does some of his best acting in this movie and doesn't let anyone down. Once again, great movie. Also portrayed in the film are the conflicts between racial groups and problems with racial profiling in communities and in prisons. Edward Norton, as well as the other actors, was excellent in his role as Derek and looked absolutley fantastic. I definitely reccomend this movie to anyone, it is quite an eye opener. When this movie finished I had to sit for a while just saying nothing. Both Edwards deliver incredible performances in it, in particular Edward Norton. The power, hate and anguish he managed to portray was forceful and fully believable. He had amazing poise and control of what he was saying and he made this film for me.The directing was also superb, and I liked the way Kaye linked the past and present by use of black/white and colour. Several symbolic techniques were present and made the movie very rich. The horriffic violence in the movie was done well, it was shown as absolutely terrible and its damage was clearly shown. The themes of the film are hard-hitting and in their portrayal were often difficult to handle and accept. They showed the harshness of racism and how hate ruins people's lives, as well as the hope that still exists when one man (Norton) overcomes it. I am rarely as moved as I was by this film and I strongly recommend it to fans of Norton, Furlong or of peace and justice. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
