From a intelligently written screenplay by Alan Ball, director Sam Mendes proves that he knows how to subtly tell a story while, at the same time, get really good performances out of his actors.
And the actors all gave great performances. Especially Kevin Spacey, Annette Bening, Thora Birch, Wes Bentley
Mena Suvari, Chris Cooper and Peter Gallagher.
This movie was like seeing a wonderful theater piece. Was this review helpful? Is this what the Founding Fathers (and Mothers), envisiioned for the future of our nation? Some being obscessed with beauty and sex, and most people feeling unfulfilled in their lives? Its true many people do, sadly, live this way....but not, thank goodness, everyone! How about the real-life story of someone like Audrey Hepburn...who, (like Angelina Jolie today), used, (uses) her beauty and fame for GOOD causes? How about someone like MIRA SORVINO.....M.e.n.s.a. member, beauty, AND actress? Or genuis happy-guy Davud Ducovny? Or Steven Speilberg....who doesnt forget to show us BOTH the highs, (and deadly lows), of human nature?
All beautiful people are NOT obscessed only with beauty! All famous people are NOT obcessed only with fame! Always rememer that Jackie Kennedy gave lots of mnoey to NOW....really! Living happily and prudently does NOT have to mean living hedonistically or prudishly! Always remember that NOT all lotery winners go broke! Some, (like JOE PESCHE), continue to enjoy life, and even play supporting partis in movies about themselves! And ATHINA ONASSIS....who could have lived anywhere before she mazrried, staye4d living with her (relatively) poorer relatives....her father and sisters and brothers....bcause she LIKED being with them! As of this date, she icontinues to be happily married!
Yes, perversion, sex obcession, beauty obcession, income tax cheats, middle-age crisis, and drug dealers DO exist. But so do good honest people who want to do good for themselves and the rest of the world! Paul Newmans first marriage fell apart....but his second is still good and going happily and creatively along! Dont ignore the bad side of life....but dont forget there is a good one, too! Sign In 1 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 11/11/2005A review of American Beauty by Bélan-1 The writer of this film has used these characters(Lester,Carolyn,Jane, and Ricky)to show the audiences many things. One of those things that they teach us is that beauty is every where and in this crazy mixed up world we live in nobody stops to notice it.The beauty is all around us,everywhere we look.
The most beautiful scene in the movie is when Ricky shows his girlfriend Jane one of the many things that he recorded on his camera.
A plastic bag just dancing in the air.It was that kind of day just before its going to snow, he says.Theres so much truth to tht scene. Its unforgetable.
Lester definetly has some pretty hilarious scenes, but hes also got some serious ones.Lester isnt suffering from a midlife crisis! He has been reborn. We see some clips of his childhood near the end of the movie and how happy he was as a child but as we saw throughout the first half of the movie he was miserable...until things started happening to him.Like, smoking pot, listening to pink floyd, working out,and meeting Angela.
Lester does everything to be as close as he can to his earlier years, the good times.
There is so much to this movie that it wont do it justice to write about it.
Watch it and juge it for yourself.
All i know is that you must not speak when you watch the scene with the plastic bag.Trust me.Actually, dont talk for the last 25 minutes of the film.No wait dont speak for the whole movie.NEVERMIND,dont talk when you watch all movies in general.Going to watch a movie, especially a movie like this one should be an experience. You should emerce yourselves in films, not think or talk about anything, the ultimate escapism.Film is as much an art form as a painting or someone playing the violin.Do yourselves a favor, whether youre watching a movie at home or at the movies, dont talk,it ruins everything for you.You wont get everythng emotionally unless your alone(not literally,or you can be).
Now,go out there and watch some good filmmaking. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 8 users found this helpful Posted: 1/31/2004A review of American Beauty by brianwilson_67 In 1998, Steven Spielberg was embarrassed at the OSCARS when his overhyped, "anti-war for dummies", project Saving Private Ryan was overlooked in favour of Shakespeare In Love. Spielberg in a fit of jealousy immediately forced his DreamWorks cronies to come up with a film that was sure to win the OSCAR the following year. American Beauty, a rip-off of the more subtle and less watched Ice Storm, was quickly rifled off. Of course, this film bears all the stereotypes of what your average fourteen year old will tell you is wrong with suburban life. That's not to say suburban life isn't awful. It is. But come on, can't we address the problem without the bored husband, quirky wife, darkened daughter, and closeted homosexual? Don't suburban problems run a little deeper than these ridiculously shallow archetypes? And to top it all off, the film makes a run for philosophy when we watch a pseudo intellectual half-wit's video of a bag floating around. Of course, he's just a teenager and this is the kind of lightweight philosophy (the kind that real scholars would laugh at), that you would expect from a real life 18 year old. Unfortunately, the audience is supposed to interpret him as some sort of child prodigy who actually has real answers to life's problems. What is equally disturbing is that the bulk of the audience either did interpret it this way or simply didn't get it. Was this review helpful? It's like in a way al characters were trying to be something they weren't except Ricky and Jane, which is why their relationshipn was the only true one. The way the film ends is also very deep, it left a great inpact on me and it really makes you think. There is just one word to describe this movie : Beautiful... Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 11/18/2003A review of American Beauty by terminalditz A darkly comic critique of suburban stupor with a measured touch of redemption, American Beauty is a remarkable film that searches for beauty in the mundane. The tale of Lester Burnham's final year of life keenly delves into the repressed desires, rampant materialism, skewed values, and gnawing insecurities lurking behind his crisply manicured lawns and meticulously decorated house. The key element to this movie's success is its perfect blend of simplicity and believability. It doesn't need to have special effects or a huge plot because its appeal revolves around its true to life nature, which makes it easier to relate to the characters. With the success of the ideas raised in American Beauty, everything else slips into place splendidly. The sets, music, costumes and humour are all very fitting and the anchor for the film hails from the lead actors, (Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening) who are at their best, as are their suberb supporting cast, (Thora Birch, Chris Cooper, Wes Bentley and Mena Suvari). American Beauty well and truly deserved the recognition that it gained and is still in my mind, one of the best movies of the 1990's. Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 4 users found this helpful Posted: 2/28/2003A review of American Beauty by winnie_rae I know all of the other reviews give a whole explanation of how this movie tops all of the charts. But for a 16 yr old, I'm speechless... Maybe it's b/c I haven't experienced life yet fully, but this is the best movie I have ever seen. I feel just like that Thora Birch - being lost and alone. And it might just be a lost cause, but I hope not all men long and lust for a teen... That seems like wasting time to me. Ok-that's all I have to say... Bravo :P Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 2/25/2003A review of American Beauty by Anonymous This movie mixes simplicity with complexity perfectly. It is so true to life which makes it possible to see yourself in each character, which makes you like and appreciate them, or in some cases change them. The acting is amazing and the sets perfectly complemented the mood of the flim, the humdrum life. The humor is so dark and fitting. The emotions the film makes you explore covers everything. Every actor was so perfectly cast that the casting director should have gotten an award. I was so disappointed that annette bening didn't win for best actress, but thats the academy for you. This movie also makes the perfect blend of making you think but on the other hand you can watch it and take it as pure entertainment. It makes me think, though. Everytime I watch it I come up with something new. If I want to be inspired I put this in. One minute your laughing at Carolyn with her lover, the ";realitor King"; (the scene in the motel) and crying with her as she looses it when she couldn't sell a house. The movie challenges you to live a life with no regrets, to live it how you want to. It doesn't have special effects or a huge plot envolving stolen diamonds or a drug run to mexico or anything out of the ordinary. However that is this movies success, that it is all to ordinary. For anyone that has ever put on a show for people, if you've ever wanted to be something your not. If you've ever tryed to hide something and if you could or couldn't. You can identify with this movie. Everthing was so well chosen for this movie; the sets, music, costumes and overall ideas and direction. The supporting cast equally share the show as they contribute so much. A true masterpiece and work of art. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
