Way too many characters, nothing tied together in a coherent fashion. Much of the acting over the top screaming with no explanation either. Seemed very tiring to sit through. Was this review helpful? Lasey? instead and stop thinking Was this review helpful? He does a great dialect, performance, and as usual his homework.
The rest of the cast, like hey Jude Law with the brit, southern dicklect is flat and inconsistant. Who was also ill cast was Tony Soprano. Kate Winslet and Mark Ruffalo were in it because, because, to get their name on the big screen. Their were no stretch for the talent they posess. My wife really liked it, and I was glad to only pay the bargain price...oh and dont worry about a full house there was a total of 4 people in the audience...late... Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/30/2006A review of All the King's Men by jpfay I liked all the tangible parts of the movie, the sets, the shot selection and I could follow the movie having read the book and seen the original movie.
My biggest complaint is the acting of Sean Penn, who is a better actor than the man I saw on the screen. Broderick Crawford, the actor that played the original Willie Stark, played the lead role with true passion, barely controllable anger at being duped and a multilayered depth of chacter that Penn did not even approach. Penn has confused passion with strutting around a sound stage with a constant hard on. He has patterened the Willie Stark character after the wrong person from Louisianna Jerry Lee Lewis is not Huey P. Long.Crawfords performance of Stark had the struggle and the seasoned backbone to fight the machine and although his exceeses eventually bring him down, the audience actually cares for the flawed hero. Penns performance was of the annoyed metrosexual country hick who was oddly above it all.
Rent the original -- if they havent colorized it! Was this review helpful? Sean Penns accent is also almost impossible to understand. I spent the whole movie just trying to figure out what was going on, and Im not stupid. I like movies that make you think, but this one felt too much like hard work. Was this review helpful? has some historical facts about our political system. The music was also very good..It definitely held your interest. Was this review helpful? And just looking at Jude Law is a treat! But in spite of the good acting, the movie was a bit too long and the dialect hard to understand at times. Although not Oscar-worthy, a nice way to spend a rainy Saturday night. Was this review helpful? The attention to detail for the old southern landscapes and locations were great. I live in Donaldsonville and witnessed some of the moviemaking and it is amazing how they make things look on the movie screen. The cast was great and the story itself was very interesting. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Was this review helpful? The movie plot itself was a little confusing at first and sometimes difficult to make sense out of it but it was well worth the price of our ticket. The whole thing comes together at the end, so dont run out on this one. Sit there, enjoy some popcorn, enjoy the wonderful acting, and especially listen to every word so as not to lose track of what is happening throughout. (This might be a good one to own so that you are able to see it a couple of times just in case you miss something.) Was this review helpful? You must go to the movie with the mind set that it will make you thinks. If you are into extreme violent movies then dont waste your money. If you like to mentally challenged then it is worth viewing Was this review helpful? No, not even Humpty Dumpty could have put this one back together. Poor Sean! Somebody sold him a bill of goods and he fell for it hook, line and stinker. What ever happened to all the gifted Hollywood script writers? Remember the days when with their clothes on and not a curse word for miles, an actor could bring to the screen a great yarn spun by a great writer and have the audience yelling for more? Remember when movies were not FILMS (I beg your pardon) and were just darn good entertainment and we left the movie theatre (after paying a great big .50 cents for the price of admission) thinking about what we had seen for days, months and even years? Nowadays, there is not a memorable movie in the lot OR ON THE LOT, FOR THAT MATTER. It seems its all about the actor and not the act. This one too will fade into nothingness. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/22/2006A review of All the King's Men by Dave12901 Everyone should remember that this is not a Huey Long biography. The Author just uses Long as the base and takes extreme creative license to turn him into what he wants the character to be. This movie probably has 5 percent accuracy. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 9/22/2006A review of All the King's Men by Anonymous This book is on my short list of Best American Novels. I am dying to see the movie and hope it has not been mangled too much. The speech scenes in the trailer that show Willie Stark and his misguided passion gave me some serious goosebumps.
Has anyone actually SEEN the movie besides John Hartl? I live in a remote area and probably will not see it for a while. I would be interested in reading an actual review, especially if you could compare the book with the movie...otherwise, I will just wait to form an opinion!
The original movie does not compare to the book. Oscars aside, it does not do on film what Warren did on paper. It certainly is no To Kill a Mockingbird. Was this review helpful? Sign In | ||
