I think the storyline is pretty unique and Burstyn is at her best. Widowed 30-something Alice heads out of New Mexico to California with her mostly annoying 12 year old son to pursue her teenage dreams of being a singer. Needless to say the trip is not as easy as she would like. Like Alice in Wonderland, she runs into several interesting characters along the way.
