Posted: 2/18/2003A review of Al Capone by lowellv70
Slightly manufactured account or aggrandizement of Capone's rise to the top of the Chicago mob. Jim Colissimo is branching out from his downtown clubs and dabbling in bootleg booze. As he works to be a prime distributor to smaller saloons, he puts together an organization designed to ";help"; the locals fall in line to his monopoly.Among his top assistants is a young fellow from the South side named Alphonse who proves invaluable in coallescing the needed ";friendly persuasion";. But Al has itchy feet and it isn't long before he convinces Jim's #1 man that more can be accomplished without Colissimo. Al has intense ambition and no one in the Colissimo cartel sees it coming when Al finally plays his trump card. People that rub him the wrong way have a mysterious penchant of disappearing and Al is very adept at leaving no trace of involvement. After dealing with his Irish counterparts controlling the North Side, Al seizes all opportunities managing to even give the boys in New York and L.A. something to chew on after one fateful Valentine's Day. However, Al is not invulnerable and a dogged Police Chief with help from the Government, manages to find a chink in the armor that even the meticulous Capone cannot squeeze out of. Of all screen portrayals about this character, Rod Steiger still is closest to the look and demeanor of the famous Chicago Don earning himself important star kudos. This is also a great showcase for the great war-horse of show-biz; James Gregory, who uniquely holds his own in character contrast and went on to achieve great TV notoriety as the crusty NYPD Inspector Frank Luger on ";Barney Miller";. This is a basically solid effort and a good entertainment causing one to wonder just how much G-Man Eliot Ness really had to do with Capone's fall as he recieves virtually no mention in this piece.
