Any review that does not take into account the theological significance of this film is insufficient. Let me support this claim. The theme of the film is the hope that the main character (= the believer) retains despite a climate of doubt. Her hope is what drives the "detective story" element of the film, which is essentially the same story being told from different perspectives (= transmission of the gospel). She places her hope in the fact that her fiancee (= Christ) has survived what any reasonable person would believe to be certain death. From the first scene (a bombed-out crucifix hanging on the front lines) to the last scene (symbolic of the main character's death), striking theological themes and symbolism permeate "A Very Long Engagement." This fact is the salvation (no pun intended) of a film that otherwise might be regarded simply as a decent movie. I liken it to an extended parable on hope, and recommend it especially to believers who are not afraid to meditate on their faith in an unconventional manner.

This movie has so much going for it, you don't even notice that the main vehicle driving the story is a group of cowards and desserters. But then again, it's about the French. Having said that, the cinamatic quality of this movie is reminiscent of "An English Patient". You'll readily recognize the sepia color that gives this movie a dreamlike appeal. The editing, though not as challenging as required by "English Patient", is nevertheless demanding in that you never lose track of the storyline. One minor drawback is that it is subtitled, but if you understand French, no problem. The entire movie is narrated, making it more like you're reading a book. The narrator tells you what the characters are feeling and thinking. The characters, except for the few villians, are all likeable and charming, even the benevolent scoundrals. A most enjoyable movie. I'd consider purchasing the DVD when released.

I saw this film on Xmas day but never took the time to write a review, here goes: If you like Amelie, you'll love this film. Jody Foster spoke perfect French in her part, I think she should be norminated for best supporting actress for Oscar for her role. Trust me, its not Cold Mountain re-make, Audrey don't look like she's about to do a Chanel Ads in her glamorous look during end of WWI! The little farm house and the food made you want to take a trip to south of France after the movie! Manech's opening line to Mathilde is so original! Go see this film, you'll never regret it. I will see it again very soon because it'll take too long for the DVD :)

This is definitely a movie worth seeing. I found it to be one the best romantic -war films I have seen. I find it refreshing to see a movie that is truly heartfelt and captures something lost in romance these days - a sense of loyalty, genuine love, and hope that is truly charming. Set in the often overlooked and horrifying time of “The Great War" as it was called this film grabs you in a story that is genuine, mysterious, romantic, and horrific. This films story is amorously contrived through the detailistic but yet simple storytelling of the director Jean Pierre Jeunet. You cannot help but feel and cheer for Mathilde to find and solve the mystery of her lost fiancée. She takes an arduous path to find her answers that is cloudy and confusing at times. I found this one of the films greatest workings as it clouds what is happening until the end. The film’s ending is very simple but truly moving and charming. It leaves it to you to imagine what will happen and I cannot visualize a better way to close such an enchanting story.

This movie is about love and hope at its center, but is written as a detective story with a woman who is irresistably drawn to truth and superstition at the same time....seems odd but it really has a sense of larger forces at work. Some of the scenes are breathtakingly shot, and the love scenes are intense, with the sense of limited time and death behind the door. Above all the scenes are held together by a web that finally starts bringing the film to its destination. It does sustain a long complex effort with rewarding intellectual and emotional ambitions.

Beautiful, charming and entertaining in a good way. This film takes you away.. And these days, emotion, visual beauty and simplicity are some rare things to find. Congratulations.
