According to Hollywood folklore, this movie is based on / or "inspired by" the life and marriage of actor John Gilbert to Ina Claire. Gilbert was the highest paid star of 1928, and during his honeymoon (with Ina Claire)- the fatal stock market crash of 1929 occurred. Gilbert was now broke. His next film with MGM (his first talkie) was a dismal failure. According to Kenneth Anger (Hollywood Babylon)and several other Hollywood biographers - MGM and other studios intentially altered the audio recordings of several of their largest silent stars (thus branding the stars "shriekers" and ruining their careers.) This allowed several of the studios to break their contracts with some of their more expensive / highest-paid actors. The studios would make the stars normal voices sound high and whiny, and effeminate - then audiences would ridicule and shun that stars pictures. Studios also ensured that tabloids and columnishts spread the word.
Thus treated, and publically humilated, Gilbert's career was ruined. But Ina Claire was on her way up..
The actual "beach" scene at the end is twist - but did actually occur - John Bowers did it (at Malibu) in the early 1930's.. After seeing the other two re-makes - (yikes, Streisand is aweful!!) the original is definately the best movie of the three. Was this review helpful?
