Well. . . first you got the Angel of Death functioning on two levels--Asphodel's there to help ease and guide the transition of the dying--both old Chuck and the show. . . and she brings a quiet and (almost) dignified death to both. I think her ethereal wandering in and out of many scenes is balanced by Molly--the stage manager--who is everywhere in the show--always with a purpose and bursting with a pregnancy. And then for the Altman fans you have the slice of life scenes from the dressing rooms--and always the show is continuing on stage. I LOVED this movie-- on second watching-- AFTER I had the opportunity to think about what was going on in the movie. During my initial watching I was confused and almost a little angry at it--like many of the previous posters. The music is true to the radio show and Guy Noir is precisely as I imagined him--a self important klutz. I think my favorite scene (non musical) is where Asphodel and GK are backstage and she is explaining that she is the Angel Of Death but that she once lived and her actual death occurred while listening to Prairie Home Companion--and how she slways thought of the people on the shows as her friends. That scene was pure magic--the way they were companionably and comfortably discussing death (and traffic). But must admit--this came only after second watching and long reflection. What do I know--I'm just an old fart that just discovered GK about 3 yrs ago and have become a fan since. But for those who love linear thinking in movies--this is a good movie to avoid.

I must say, I am a fan of the Prarie Home Companion Radio Show, and listen to them every sunday. But with one viewing of this movie, I was ready to call it quits. In fact, I was ready to call it quits half-way through it. The story of the radio station closing is somewhat creative, but the other story lines surrounding it made no sense to me OR my dad, who is also a big fan of the radio show. In all seriousnes, we burst out in ridicule laughter several times. No offence Altman, but I want to know just why you had to make this movie. Its a bore. Im not much of a fan to critics, because they always rate high on junk and movies I could care less about. This movie is another example of that. I dont care how realistic this movie is, or how well this movie plays out. I dont like it, my dad doesnt like it, my friends didnt like it. Its boring and vague. I watched it all the way through to see If i could scrounge up at least one thing about the movie I liked, but in the end it just felt like I had totaly wasted my time.

I just love the radio show Prairie Home Companion. That being said, this movie just didnt speak to me. There were some funny-entertaining parts, but for the most part it just seemed flat.

I have listened to the radio show for years and the movie just makes me feel like Im right there at The Fitzgerald. (Even though I have never been.) This movie is about the complex yet simple mind of Garrison Keillor who, I believe, thinks that having fun is the basis for comedy. Its about removing the political, social, religious, etc... masks that we make for ourselves, and gets to the core of what makes us feel good. You know it is like warm apple pie... with ice cream and a hot cup o joe on a cool fall evening while on your back porch in your favorite rocking chair listening to your mate gripe about the dogs barking too much and loving him or her anyway. Mix that in with old music that anyone can sing along with and it just plain fun. Of course a half bottle of wine makes it that much better. My only disappointment was that I did not get to hear the theme song to Powdered Milk Biscuits!

I am a fan of the NPR show Prairie Home Companion. Its a fun, folksy show to listen to on the weekends. Just wanted to make sure I prefaced this in the review. When I found out this film was made based on the radio show, I wanted to go see it and shelled out 9.50 for the opportunity. IT was truly a let-down. I liked Woody Harrelson and John C. Riley in the film doing the song Bad Jokes, about the only bright spot in this film. Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin are downright annoying and just not convincing at all as a Minnesotan sister act. Other scenes were unsettling, such as a pregnant woman drinking champagne. Anyone ever heard of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome? Hello, Mr. Altman? Anyway, I will continue to listen to the radio show and just forget I ever bothered with this banal masterpiece of boredom.

The two hours in this movie just flew by -- it was corny, funny, and typically Keillor. I love the humor on the show and the music every week, and this made me feel like I actually was at the production. I learn something every time I read a Keillor book or listen to his weekly radio show and this was no different. I left feeling like the world was okay and I could forget war, three dollar per gallon gas, and other Republicanisms and remember a better time sitting with my mother listening to the radio on a Saturday night. Oh, and by the way, I drive a red Mustang, not a beige Ferrari.........

This movie brings back a time when Saterday night ment a long lonely drive with nothing but PBS and Garrison Keilor to listen to. At first you listened for the music, then the jokes, and finally it became addictive. This movie brought all those joyous times back. We want more movies like this one. Simple but oh how complex. It was a joy to hear and see.

Inside Jokes. Thats what makes or breaks A Prairie Home Companion. If youre a fan of Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillors weekly Saturday night radio program on National Public Radio, then you have a clue as to what the show is about. Basically, its typical Prairie Home Companion broadcast fimed in and around the Fitzgerald theater. Some people (like Keillor) play themselves, some playing composite characters who resemble Keillors array of guests, and still others who bring Keillors characters to life. Think of this as the show that got loose. Where some of Keillors characters, like washed-up P.I., Guy Noir, Dusty and Lefty, the singing cowboys, and Azriel, the Angel of Death come to life and act out the fanciful monlogues, in and around the music that is a PHC staple. If youve ever been part of a live-theater production of anything, youll also recognize the back-stage goings-on the flub-and-recovery improvisation that keeps a show going. Beyond that, the plot, if you can call it that, is pretty thin. If youve never done any of that...sit down, eat your popcorn and try to enjoy the music. And remember, its only two hours long and you dont have to date him or her again.

I cant believe that I actually tried to sit through this total piece of garbage. Sure am glad it was a free ticket, because there was no way I would have ever paid to see such a rank display of -OverActing -Bad Acting -Lame Storytelling -Foul stinking direction I am glad that I walked out of this one. Had I stayed, the sheer moron-tics of this film might have made me become as dorky, stupid, and unappealing as the characters in this this cheap farce. Robert Altmans best (HA... If there ever were any?!) days are behind him. Someone needs to tell the ole fart he is a worthless hack and has NO talent and should go to an old folks home and take that idiototic ego maniac, Garrison Keillor with him... Fast and Furiously. The Prairie home comapny was funny and interesting 15 years ago for about 15 minutes. Now its just crap and only appeals to dorks that live and breath NPR. I can see why fans of NPR like this boring pathetic celluloid tripe. It appeals to their pseudo-intellectual, tacky, artsy-fartsy, dullard mindframes.

Posted: 6/25/2006A review of A Prairie Home Companion by Ginnybee43
Both my husband and I loved this movie. It has real people, in real situations, with subtle humor -well, the Bad Jokes song is certainly not subtle, but it is a riot! The songs are warm, with some oldies done just as they were written, and others rewritten with witty lyrics. Although much of the humor concerns Minnesota and its environs, one doesnt have to live there, or ever have been there (I havent), to appreciate it. Not much happens, but we spend about two hours with some delightful, real people, done in such a way that we truly feel we are there with them. No special effects, no car chases, no explosions, no moronic, supposedly mature male characters acting like teenagers. In other words, a great movie, about and for, adults.

A very fun movie. Nice to go see a movie that for once isnt full of chase scenes, car crashes, crazy stunts etc. Just pure down home fun. If you are from Minnesota, there are parts that will make you laugh uncontrollably. It definately fills a niche. Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin are magic together and Woody Harelson was superb.

Well, my husband and I love to listen to NPR and we both wear lots of deodorant and I shave my armpits and my legs, thank you very much! And I did not like the movie at all. I thought it was torture and should have walked out right away. It was boring and it did not pull me into the characters lives like a movie should. This movie was made for a very small crowd therefore it should have been in limited release.

This movie appeals to a certain crowd. A crowd I dont hang with. It was so dorky that I felt embarrassed for the actors. The theatre reeked of B.O. eminating from the NPR fans. They always have onion breath and dont shave their armpits. BORING!
