I loved this movie Who thinks of a movie about folk singers? The actors did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life with their little quirks. What a great movie and I can't wait for the next one. I almost peed myself laughing so hard. Was this review helpful? I laughed from beginning to end as I watched this movie last summer, and I have bought A MIGHTY WIND, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN,and BEST IN SHOW since. These actors are nothing short of genious in their often ad-libbed character portrayals. It was one of the best movies I've seen all year. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 11/17/2003A review of A Mighty Wind by DroneHole "A Mighty Wind" is an elaboration of a Saturday Night Live skit done on November 3, 1984. In it the Folksmen appear, reuniting after 20 some years. It is the same Folksmen and the same actors singing the same songs at the center of this movie. The SNL piece has a brief mockumentary as well as a live performance; so does the film.

There is a very dark sarcasm to Guest's work not the least of which is dredging up old TV material, bloating it like a dead corpse, and foisting it upon an audience afraid of not laughing. Guest is a 30 year veteran of musical put-ons. He appeared in the off-Broadway "Lemmings" with John Belushi and Chevy Chase in 1973 playing a mean guitar in a series of vignettes about a Woodstock-like rock concert. Yes, Guest can play, but by performing in theatre instead of concert he is both insulated and superior; he enjoys irony without conscience. The craft we see displayed in Guest's films has its roots in the practice of "goofing" popular with recreational drug users in the late 60s and early 70s. This conceit, short of both parody and comedy, has the film sardonically crawling along like a doped up Tingler trying to attach itself to your artistic spin, daunted only by a refusal to force a chuckle.

Yet when the film has to deal with its own live performance segment, it slyly morphs into conventional dramatic film narrative, and intoxicated by its aloof self-assurance at this feat, veers into the maudlin as the character Mickey and Mitch kiss. A rousing musical climax is followed by an epilogue in which the mockumentary is renewed.

There was something funny about the reunion of old folk artists in 1984. Like an element with a long radioactive decay life, there's still some fun to be poked at folk in 2003. But that's it - some. A night at the opera? A day at the races?

No: a kind of drive-by cinema, look-out, passing "A Mighty Wind." Was this review helpful? Not so long ago, they comprised Spinal Tap, possibly the funniest film I have ever seen, now, they have returned as a folk band, hilarity ensues, as expected. The cast is composed of almost all of the actors in the great comedies Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman. With all of these great films, you can almost call this group an acting troupe. Their formula of making films: No script. Improvising lines, almost 80 hours of filming, then go back and cut it down to 2 hours. Genius. These people are the real deal, this movie is the real deal. Though not as funny as say, Spinal Tap, it is still fall out of your seat in luaghter funny, I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys sophisticated comedy and good acting, I do not recommend this to people who go to the movies to simply see Ben Affleck or J. Lo or Britney or any of those no talent bums, cause you wouldn't get it. Was this review helpful? I was in the movie theater for an hour and I laughed one barely noticeable laugh the whole time. One genuine laugh to the numerous laughs I experienced when I watched "Tap" and "Show." This movie is an F, The biggest F you can give a movie, followed by, "Give me my money back, Bob Balaban!"~Pathetic Film for Sure: 1 out of 10 Was this review helpful? I could appreciate what they were trying to do, but it just didn't entertain. Was this review helpful? The first time you get the main stuff then it gets more fun each time you re-watch it.The characters are pushed almost to the edge of goofiness but are stopped just at the point of going too far. Fred Willard could have had a few more lines (or does he just make it up as he goes along?) Anyway, more Fred would have been better. This movie skipped over the drug culture and war protests of the time, but that doesn't make it less funny. It would have been interesting to have seen them take a few shots at those issues.I've enjoyed all four of the movies this group of performers has done. These are movies that aren't really great, but they're good entertainment and are more funny the second (and third) time you watch them. Was this review helpful? If this movie was a little quicker it could have been a cult classic. As it was I kept waiting for more. What comedy was there was excellent, but the comedy was not enough. Over-all, good quality but not enough quanity. Was this review helpful? If you're ready for the quirks, the subtlety, the charm, this one's for you. If you have an inkling about the folk boom in the 60's, this one's for you. A superb effort by Guest et al. that get's comedy right without the language, sex, and violence we've come to expect from Hollywood. Think Monty Python, not Benny Hill.P.S. If comedy has to hit you over the head with a heavy stick to make you laugh, this one's definitely NOT for you!!! Was this review helpful? It not only had the same silly humor seen in Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, it had heart as well. The characters delivered the usual one-liners but the subtleties were what really made this film absolutely hilarious. The cast, of course, were magnificent, particularly Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara as Mitch and Mickey. Everyone though delivered an amazing performance reaffirming the remarkable talent present in these films. The improv was great, the realism was terrific, and the music in the film was not only entertaining but catchy as well. Overall, A Mighty Wind is my favorite thus far. I can’t wait to see what the crew delivers next! Was this review helpful? It's harder to do comedy than drama, and they have found the formula and it works. They improvise off of a basic story and it is amazing. It's lots of fun because it laughs with a subject instead of right at it, and we don't have enough of this today.Go see it and just have fun. Was this review helpful? A Mighty Wind holds its own with both. The usual suspects make up the cast and do a superb job as always selling the subtle idiosyncracies of their characters. Although the characters are a bit more cartoonish in some cases than the more deadpan Best of Show, they are still funny, entertaining and likable. If you liked the others, including the earlier Spinal Tap, you absolutely will not walk away from this feeling ripped off. It was too slowwwwwwww. This movie reminded me of a high school documentary project. It is a terrible film and certainly one that is not worth seeing. Save your eight bucks for a good movie.
