It's also a great film to watch when you're high on drugs. Was this review helpful? To the film:Marcello Mastrianni is one of the most charismatic actors I have ever seen on screen, smiling and joking, scowling and screaming, dancing around like a child. And he is the ultimate enthusiast about any idea Fellini wants to convey. Notice the Pinnochio reference in the scene where Guido's wife and her friend are berating him for his infidelity: he grumpily denies their accusations, and then, very subtley he begins to tap his nose as the women go back to talking. This is not the first time in the film he favors his nose while lying. The bravery of this film--its fragmented format is one example. The endulgent (in a good way) memory sequences... the Saraghina scene in particlar.Of course, the camera work is full of creativity, the music is so astutely applied that its effectiveness locks images of the film in your head forever (I'm thinking again of the Saraghina scene, but the health spa/Wagner scene, and many others).Watch this movie if you care about the human condition and about movies that are more complex than you will ever be able to figure out on your own. Also watch this movie if you're irresponsible like me--Guido is the greatest hero of irresponsibility ever put on film. Was this review helpful? Fellini's films are often surreal, and this one is no exception. filmed in black and white, this film still has more emotional color than most movies ever made. the characters, with their flaws, are so realistic, they will remind you of friends, family, or even mirrored reflections of yourself. Guido (Mastroianni) is a troubled director and screenwriter trying to make this one last film. he is held prisoner by his dreams, relationship problems, memories, questions of religion, and sexual urges. every little aspect of this is wonderful. this is an excellent movie which i fear will be exiled by my generation and of those to come simply by the fact that you have to read the subtitles. don't let a masterpiece become only a memory.
