For those reviews complaining about historical accuracy, I believe the point of the film might have been missed. The movie is essentially being told by a Ancient Greek Spartan. The story weaves in classic Greek mythology, and is exaggerated as such a tale might be expected (e.g., elephants are larger than life, the enemy is barely recognizable as human, and giants and minotaurs fight along with the Persians). The story is not suppose to an historical representation of what actually happened, but rather a recreation of how a Spartan would tell the story of the fight. And from that point of view, it is probably very accurate--though in the end obviously fiction.
Definitely worth watching. The first view minutes may leave you wondering what you turned on, but continue to watch--once you have adjusted to the format, and understand how the movie is being related to you on the screen, it is well worth watching. Of course it is a tad ,'one dimensional', comic books are like that !
If you are looking for an historically accurate film based on the events at Thermopylae then you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for damn good entertainment, you will not be disappointed.
The cast is excellently chosen and the computer images are well done, I was impressed and I was also moved by the relationship between Leonidas and his Queen ! "Come back with your shield, or on it" These words were really spoken and as they come down to us over the centuries; we get an idea of just how brave these heroes really were ! you barely get to know any characters and it's just fighting.
the CGI was not too real. over done.
still a good movie for those who like carnage and for those with egos and no brains.
won't match up to braveheart or lord of the rings,where it tried to copy in so many ways.
it needed more... so much more,yet was a welcome movie to see.
better then gladiator by far and less boring.
just not much story. just a silly CGI war and predictable.
pretty good acting,nice images. just needed more war and story.
perhaps a sequel should be done on past wars they had....
still a great movie. just not as great as kids will obviously say simply for gore alone.
fake gore at that. should of been less cgi blood. looked like freddy versus jason style,fakeness...

To all those who deem this movie to be historically inaccurate, please go to the nearest library and get a non-fictional book to read. Leave everyone else alone to make their own judgement, okay? Also, to those who see any political inuendos and 'conspiracy' subjects, try running for office, or please be silent. It's a movie, and let's leave it at that. Thanks.
Second: I went and saw this movie with my husband when it first came out, and aside from my misgivings at first, I thought it was a well-done movie; Gerard Butler had an excellent part (my husband is still quoting lines from the movie to this day; he's in the Coast Guard so that adds to the drama. :P ) It's about one of the most crutial battles in ancient history, and how democracy was started pretty much. Granted, battles are meant to be bloody and gory and harsh on the eyes, but that's where the special effects really shine. If one were to look at the documentaries (saw an HBO special about this), Gerard and his 300 men trained to work as a team, making that portion more realistic, and true to Spartan tradition. I read the graphic novel, and I have to admit, adding the queen's involvement in the movie was a nice touch here; even women can be as tough as men...and it shows.
All in all, I was highly impressed at Frank Miller's latest piece of work, and am looking forward to other movies he'll make in the future. I would recommend seeing this movie, or getting it on DVD when it's released. Was this review helpful? I liked the visual effects; however sometimes it did seems alittle cloesed in. What realy gave this movie over the top status is the score, it was powerful and done well with meeting the drama of the film. The story is one of the best underdog stories of history. However, there were some tweeks made to the film to make it more hollywood and less exact in history. Who cares bc it rocks! Was this review helpful? It was a violent entourage of epic proportions. A film which should satisfy even the most blood thirsty of all fans. The fact is, there have been few civilizations on earth that valued freedom over life. The reason this movie struck such a positive note with an overwhelming number of Americans (men, women of all races) is, we, as the beneficiaries of forefathers who valued freedom in a like fashion are beginning to wake up and realize the importance of the responsibility left us. This movie really brought home the idea that freedom is by no means free. I did not cheer at the sight of the carnage but I did accept it as necessary to tell the story. While the 300 stood fast their ground, knowing that death awaited them, they were not the baddest asses in the movie - that title is reserved for the queen. What a powerful opening salvo against the invading Persians (Iranians today) when the King glanced toward his queen for a subtle nod of approval prior to dispatching the arrogant Emissary. It was a new movie so my buddies and I figured wed watch it since everyone was talking about it. It was outstanding, we absolutely loved it. It was pretty interesting and its something that reflects a part of our history. Some people think its gay because they think they know it all, but when asked about the history of our world and others......they aint got nothing to say. i give it a thumbs up.....it was awesome!!!! If you enjoy, gladiator, brave heart and all that good stuff...youll like this too.
