I was absolutely blown away by every aspect of the film. It is truly a masterpiece; but one that must be approached with care. For those seeking out the film for the first time and will be watching it on a television I have two bits of advice. First, ensure that you allow plenty of uninterrupted time and have a clear, calm mind. Kubrick and Clarke are going to take you from "The Dawn of Man" to the edge of the universe. You don't want any distractions on this 'ultimate trip'. Second, use the biggest, highest definition video system you can find, preferably one with a theater grade multi-channel sound system. Trumbull's special effects and the classic sound track deserve the best to deliver the best. Keep a clear mind and I'll see you at the Star Gate! Was this review helpful? It remains a personal favorite. The film still astounds me with its capabilities. How did Kubrick do it? Even now, with all our CGI at our fingertips, the effects, the very real experience of watching this film is still unsurpassed. Yes, it is, in comparison to films since, very slow-going. But, for me, that's what I like about it. It's very English-it's very Was this review helpful? It's not about excitement or action, it's about the effect on your mind. A true masterpiece, it doesn't deserve to be bad mouthed by people who just aren't deep enough to get it. This movie created the genre of what we call 'sci-fi' today. It's a tragedy that we today can't appriciate what a work of genius this movie really is. Was this review helpful? Sweeping in it’s magisterial glory, atoned by a classical score irrevocably tied to the visionary balladic-dance of man in space, “2001” crosses the bounds of cinema to become a relic of pure art: the likes of which we are fortunate to have, but could never produce again. I think it worked in the sixties b/c everyone was stoned. Remember how the first Star Trek was all about the special effects? Ditto here. But this movie has been hyped for so long as being so brilliant that most are afraid they'll be labeled as ignorant or as attention-span-challenged if they trash it. I'm neither ignorant nor young, just honest. Was this review helpful? The worst part of the movie was the 15 minutes before the final seen, in which there in no logic even though it is in directly trying to show the meaning of life and time. Was this review helpful? I'm just 21, but, I gotta admit that, putting together the whole sci-fi movies of 20TH CENTURY doesn't even come close to '2001'. The first time i saw it, on year 2000, I stayed astonished, amazed. it changed my perception about sci- fi movies. It breakes by itself the wrong perception command-and-conquer-the-space, and space-full-of- monsters stablished by hollywood, without any philosophical contents about time and spiritual potential. When it was released, in 1968, changed forever the way to make space movies. We see that spaceships, besides EVERYTHING,look pretty real. you think that future is just as that. but don't be disapointed if you think is 'old', it was in fact 30 years ahead of it's time, nothing like star trek or others so old fashioned in the 60'sNow,on 2003, I'm certainly sure that 2001 is the best sci-fi movie of all 20th century, and my opinion grew bigger knowing that it's the twenty-second best movie, according to AFI . So, the bet is opened in this new century, and I think it'll be difficult to overshadow it. is it necesary, by the moment, the three Lord of the ring films (laugh). The thing is that almost everything can be done in commercial movies, and that makes them to have no sense. 2001's director, Stanley Kubrick, achieved a high level describing in a new language wich would be the relation between humans an artificial technology, doted of intelligence and reasoning. I invite to everybody to rent it, and discover an excellent gift to mankind. A possible answer to some unanswered questions. and a inseparable marriage between music and the outer space Was this review helpful? This film had the unique construct of Clarke as overseer, and Stanley Kubrick who, as usual, carefully assembled a production that broke pioneering ground in special effects that was to carry on to an innovative film student at USC; one George Lucas, and his erstwhile comrade-at-arms, Steven Spielberg. Billed as 'The Ultimate Trip', 2001: A Space Odyssey set most precedents for direction, production and technical innovation that are held true, to this day. You'll even catch ";Hitchcockian"; overtones as HAL's rebellion is chronicled. On a pre-historic Earth, the planets of the solar system have joined in what astronomers were to call 'the harmonic convergence' i.e. all orbiting planets of our Sun pass at one apex in single-file with each other causing an astral presence to materialize before the inhabitants. The encounter between entities casts this presence as an icon of a 'tree of knowledge' which serves a social catalyst to to these beings resulting in evolutionary behavior modifications, the ripples of which are felt into the 21st century; where scientist decendants, again encounter this presence, fueling curiosities toreach beyond the stars, daring to touch the heart of destiny, itself. This film caused a revival at the box-office from a long-time sag in revenues, literally getting people to go to the movies again. A landmark of the cinematic art, standingamong the finest works of history's cinematic library. Was this review helpful?
