An 8 year old could watch this movie and not even get scared... they would probably laugh. The plot in the begging starts out ok until halfway into the movie you get confused because the main character wakes up from a dream which was thought to be his night in room 1408. Towards the end of the movie makes sense but was a thrown together that could have been alot better. Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack play their parts well, but altogether its just a dumb movie. Jackson, but I'm disappointed with this movie. It started off quite well, tense and creepy, his feeling of madness started, and I thought it would be a really suspenseful movie. It got really stupid and unbelievable, even for a story that is meant to be bizarre. These two actors' talents were wasted on this film. Was this review helpful? I am easily scared, but this movie didnt do it at all! If your vision of horror is blood and guts this movie will disappoint. However, as a parent I can think of no greater horror than watching your only child die TWICE just to satisfy the evil perversion driving room 1408. For those who thought the ending was lame...try to live with the loss of someone you loved so much and you will agree...some memories can't be gotten rid of...you just have to live with them. The whole point of the movie was to prove to the grieving father that an afterlife for his dead child DID exist. The proof was in the recording of her voice. Was this review helpful? the film was very engrossing...well paced, lucid and quite creepy...
however the twist 3 quarters into the movie should have been reworked and the conclution was too easy.
however this movie WAS definitly 3 quarters good.
more so because cusak was able to carry it through to the finish.
few could have done better.

If you like horror, supernatural, thrillers etc. then don't bother watching this movie. Go get a whopper or something, that would be much more enjoyable and satisfying, because this move was neither.
However if you like movies that resemble a really bad acid trip, or enjoy movies that make no sense rhyme or reason. or a stripped down version of true horrors, and supernatural thrillers then this might just be down your aisle.
Simply put, the acting was awful, no real character development, a border line plot, and the special effects were only mediocre at best. Was this review helpful? Few have been commercially successful with the notable exception of Shawshank Redemption and perhaps Running Man (which did fairly well at the box office if memory serves correctly) The problem with 1408 was that the adaption of Kings story seemed as trapped as the character portrayed by John Cusack. There were several elements of this story that could have been fleshed out more like the character of the hotel manager, which could have served a more sinister purpose. Also the question of who really sent out the postcard which drew the protagonist to the hotel in the first place. We assume that it was the manager, who appears to have had the purpose of luring him there to do just what he did....destroy the room. I thought it more plausable that the manager could have lured others to their deaths in 1408 to satisfy the evils hunger. The room could have been the heart of a living building. The ending was a total letdown with only a minor surprise at the end. It seemed very contrived. I wish Mr King had more imput on this and helped with the development of the script instead of just selling it off....taking the paycheck as it were. Was this review helpful? We all love scary movies, but we were pretty disappointed with this one. I spent most of the movie trying to tie things together in hopes of it making sense in the end by it did not. I was under the impression that it would have a wonderful ending like the Sixth Sense but again disappointed. I may see it once more on video but that would be just to try to make sense of it. If you like horror movies with lots of gore and stuff of that nature this flick probaly won't tickle your fancy. This movie is not scary, but very jumpy at times. There are moments where the music booms and something pops up unexpectedly on the screen, but nothing to wild. I think it was a great movie. John Cusak was wonderful in the movie, he was dedicated to the role. I loved Samuel L. Jackson's character as well, even thought it was very small he set the tone.
