In the early years of the 19th century, escaped slaves found a haven among the Seminole Indians of Florida. Likewise, the Seminoles gained a staunch ally in the black people who made their way to the territory. Winner of an Emmy award, this half-hour documentary chronicles the alliance. The Seminole Indians of Florida were Native Americans from various tribes who banded together during the 18th century. Indeed, "seminole" translates to, "one who has camped out from the regular towns," or "runaway." Among the Seminoles, escaped African slaves were free. When the U.S. Army attempted relocation of the Seminoles, it led to three wars with the tribe. Blacks fought shoulder to shoulder with the Seminoles. This program reveals how the two diverse people lived in harmony together. ~ Steve Blackburn, Rovi
