Synopsis
Azerbaijan is a nation sandwiched between Russia and Iran that was engaged in a bitter conflict with Armenia in the late 1980s, in which 30,000 Azerbajians died and one-fifth of the nation was seized by Armenia. Given the crucial importance of this event in Azerbaijan's history, it's appropriate that the nation's first feature film, Sari Gelin, should deal with the war with Armenia. Gadir is an artist from Armenia who is plagued by feelings of uselessness; seeing little reason to go on, he joins the Army and is sent into battle against Azerbaijan. But Gadir is soon captured by enemy troops as he attempts to save Artavazan, a soldier from Azerbaijan. Eventually, the two men find themselves stranded, and they struggle through the abandoned battlefields, looking for a civilization. As they stumble though the ruins, Gadir has a vision of a bride dressed in yellow, which in both cultures is a symbol of death and the cruelties of fate. Sari Gelin was shown in 2000 at the London and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
