Oliver Reed, "Gladiator" (2000)

Never a huge star on this side of the Atlantic, this hard-drinking, London-born thespian is nevertheless fondly remembered for his god-awful singing in the Who's rock opera flick "Tommy" (1975) as well as turns in period costume spectacles "Oliver!... more" (1968) and "The Three Musketeers" (1973). A dark, menacing presence in much of his earlier work, Reed was primed for a career renaissance with his elegant role as the compassionate slave dealer Proximo in "Gladiator." He died during filming at a pub near the set, after another of his legendary bar benders. His scenes were completed using body doubles and CGI, and are a lasting tribute to this underrated British talent. (Henry Garfunkel/Retna Ltd.)
