War movies, specifically movies covering the current war in Iraq, have not
fared well at the box office or with critics (see "Lions for Lambs," "Rendition," "Stop-Loss," or "In the Valley of Elah"). So it was probably a surprise to
studios
... more and trend watchers that Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" fared so well. But when
you watch this gripping, tense and ultimately moving triumph, you can see why:
It's a great movie. Devoid of pretention or overly political finger wagging,
"The Hurt Locker," a low-budget, beautifully acted bit of grittiness, is about
the soldiers, chiefly those who disarm bombs in the middle of combat. The New
Yorker hailed the movie a classic, one that "will be studied twenty years from
now." Star Jeremy Renner is now rumored to be the next Mad Max. And the
movie will be nominated for an Oscar, no doubt about it. And deservedly so.
