Gordon Willis started from scratch to restore and remaster the films for this
new special edition. With the original negatives worn out, they turned to the
best materials they could find and took pains to preserve the film grain and
purposeful "imperfections" of Willis' photography that gave the film its
defining visual character. Their goal was to present it on high definition home
video in a way that replicates, as closely as possible, the original theatrical
experience. The result is something special, and a sign that Blu-ray is not just
for blockbuster spectacle.
