J.J. Abrams had the attention of the entire American
populace with his mega successful "Lost." But, don't mess with our
"Star Trek." Even non-Trekkies were worried about the newest take on the
legendary television series. But
... moreguess what? Abrams achieved a wonderful
balance of reverence, revision, camp, emotion and action. It was impossible to
resist. The wonderful "Moon," directed by Duncan Jones, didn't receive as much
box office and got mixed notices, but it also harkened back to older science
fiction, creating a spare, "2001"-inspired work that found a beautiful performance
in Sam Rockwell. And proving audiences continue to yearn
for smart science fiction, the fully imagined, action-packed, wonderfully gross
and multilayered "District 9," directed by Neill Blomkamp, has become a deserved hit, a
movie that is exceeding audiences' expectations by making them squirm and making
them think.
