'Semi-Pro' (2008) –
Jackie Moon: It's probably a coincidence that this was the last film ever
released by New Line. Will Ferrell went back to the well with this sports comedy
about an ABA franchise trying to make the leap to the NBA. Yet again Ferrell
resorted to the loudmouth, ... more earnest yet likeable braggart role he's perfected.
And then proceeded to beat into the ground. He plays Jackie Moon - owner,
general manager and starting power forward for the Flint Tropics – a singer who
made his fortune off his only hit single, "Love Me Sexy."
Woody Harrelson and Andre 3000 acquit
themselves nicely in supporting roles as a grizzled point guard and a high
flying dunk artist. Ferrell brings the same honest commitment to the character
he typically does, but after seeing some incarnation of this character from
Ferrell far too many times, it just feels tired.
