Go "Paranormal"!: There's nothing we love more than when a
good horror movie (not a remake, not a sequel, but something that really aims to
frighten the hell out of you) is a hit. That seems to be the case with "Paranormal Activity," which we championed here last time and
which has now done so well in its viral release that Paramount Pictures is
expanding it into a national release. Originally shown only at midnight
screenings in a dozen markets, and then in 33, the movie went to all-hours
screenings in more than 40 cities. Now, thanks to this past weekend's phenomenal
box office ($7 million on less than 200 screens) and 1 million requests for the
film through the innovative "Demand It" marketing scheme, "Paranormal" will go
wide this weekend on at least 500 screens. Can it compete with both major
releases like "Where the Wild Things Are" and the likes of "Saw VI," which arrives a week later? Watch this space. Better
yet, go watch the movie. You won't be disappointed.
