In his days on "SNL," Adam Sandler managed a pretty remarkable trick. He was
arguably one of the worst actors ever to appear on the show, mugging and goofing
through over-the-top performances as Opera Man and Cajun Man and otherwise just
being himself and acting
... more crazy. While he was no De Niro, he was easily the
funniest person on the show. That formula held true in Hollywood for a while,
too, as Sandler again mugged and goofed through hilarious but absolutely stupid
performances in "Happy Gilmore" and "Billy Madison." Recent years, however, have seen
Sandler suddenly unveil real acting chops in "Punch-Drunk Love" and "Reign Over Me," movies that are admirable but in no
way wacky. Today, he's still just as compulsively watchable as when he first
came on the scene, but for completely different reasons. (Sara DeBoer/Retna
