The lights are turned off at Picturehouse: Even before the
economy turned roughshod this fall, the media companies controlling Hollywood
studios began to signal the end of some of their costly specialty divisions.
Paramount has scaled back operations of Paramount Vantage, and
... moreWarner Bros. gave
up on Warner Independent. Sadly, though, the absorption of New Line into Warner
Bros., a huge story in itself, had the unexpected effect of shuttering
up-and-coming label Picturehouse. What is perplexing is that the division had
numerous critical and box office successes with films such as "Pan's Labyrinth," "The Orphanage," "La Vie En Rose" and "A Prairie Home Companion." Plus, it had the
best-designed studio logo and title card in years. It will be missed.
