EVOLUTION II:Angelina Jolie, 72nd Annual Academy
Awards, 2000; 76th Annual Academy Awards, 2003 Nominated for -- and winning
-- an Oscar for her supporting performance as a sociopathic nutcase in "Girl, Interrupted," Jolie came dressed and coiffed like Vampira,
her dark goth
... more getup a projection of her wild-child persona. Presumably, Billy Bob Thornton and multiple tattoos were still on
the horizon, so Jolie spent the evening scandalizing squares by passionately
mouth-kissing her peroxide-blond older brother. Just three years later,
ever-so-refined in a white satin halter-gown, Angelina was well on her way to
creating the New Jolie, mother of a tribe of multicultural kids, compassionate
United Nations rep, Oscar-hopeful star of the politically sacred "A Mighty Heart." Not much left of Billy Bob's bad girl when La
Jolie walks the red carpet these days, Brad Pitt on her arm, her face an
unsmiling, anticelebrity mask, her couture subdued, edging toward goddess garb.
I kinda liked the lady better when her motto was still "épater la bourgeoisie!"
