Beetlejuice

WINONA RYDER: By turns gamin and goofball, Winona Ryder broke through to big screen acclaim in Tim Burton's 1988 comedy, "Beetlejuice," then progressed to a series of well-received roles in both indie and studio movies that showed her equally at home in period pieces and contemporary... more outsider roles. Then on Dec. 12, 2001, she was arrested for shoplifting designer clothes at the Beverly Hills' Saks Fifth Avenue, and during the subsequent trial was accused of prescription drug abuse, a charge later dropped. Ryder ultimately was convicted of grand larceny and vandalism, and sentenced to three years' probation and 480 hours of community service. While she lowered her profile, Ryder continued has continued working, appearing in both major studio releases (including the Adam Sandler remake of "Mr. Deeds") and edgier independent roles such as Richard Linklater's dystopian "A Scanner Darkly."
