Leonard Rosenman, March 4, age 83: Rosenman was a quiet
journeyman of a Hollywood musician. He was friends with actor James Dean, who introduced him to director Elia Kazan, which resulted in his composing the score for
"East of Eden," and then "Rebel Without a Cause," and many other
... more films, such
as "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." He won two Oscars, for
original score for "Barry Lyndon" (1975) and for adapted score for "Bound for Glory" (1976), which was based on the music of Woody Guthrie. According to the Internet Movie Database, he
once said, "I try to enter directly into the movie's plot and tell the audience
something about the story that they can't possibly perceive by just watching the
film. For example, if I write for a scene of two people kissing and I write some
horrendous music, you know more than just a kiss is happening."
