Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks play Zack and Miri, lifelong buddies and desperately broke roommates who produce their own adult movie to pay off their debts and discover that sex changes everything. Who saw that coming? This is a Kevin Smith film, so it revels in F-bombs and poop jokes and all manner of creatively filthy language, but it's also an oddly engaging romantic comedy set in the working-class milieu and customer service culture. Rogen is a natural as Smith's alter ego, spewing forth profane dialogue like he was born to it. And the supporting cast, including Smith regulars Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson, Craig Robinson, and real-life porn actress Katie Morgan, creates a warm, affectionate community reminiscent of the eccentric crew of Tim Burton's "Ed Wood." This is a rare Smith DVD with no commentary track, but the 74-minute documentary "Popcorn Porn: The Making of Zack and Miri" offers all you'd want to know about the making of the film, including every gooey detail about the infamous "poop shot" and the struggle to get the film an R rating. There are 42 deleted/extended/alternate scenes, more than 90 minutes of footage (practically a film in its own right) that includes an alternate opening, ending and lots of ad-libbing. There's even more in "Outtakes, Ad-libs and Bloopers" (13 minutes) and "Seth Vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy," a seven-minute sequence in which Rogen and Justin Long fight not to crack up while sparring with ad-libs in the reunion scene. Also features 21 webisodes and the onstage Q&A with Smith and cast at Comic-Con 2008. | ||
