R,1hr 31min Released: October 19, 2007 Director: Distributor: Lionsgate Films/After Dark Films Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies In the opening scene of this romantic comedy set in a purgatory for suicides, jilted boyfriend Zia (Patrick Fugit) cleans his little apartment to sounds of a Tom Waits record and, just as neatly, slices his wrists for the oblivion of death. Who knew the afterlife would be so ... depressing? "Everything's the same here, only worse," he drones in voice-over before leaving his shabby city for a road trip with a morose Russian (Shea Whigham) and a sassy hitchhiker (Shannyn Sossamon) in a beater with a black hole under the passenger seat. Goran Dukic adapts Etgar Keret's story with surreal whimsy and directs his "Route 666" tour through a wasteland of nothingness with deadpan understatement. For a place where no one smiles (it's just part of the metaphysical landscape), it's got a quirky sense of humor. Will Arnett, Leslie Bibb and Waits co-star. Features commentary by director Dukic, producers Tatiana Kelly and actors Fugit and Mikal P. Lazarev; the featurette "Making the Final Cut: The Wristcutters Journey"; deleted scenes; storyboards; and a gallery of Fugit's on-set photos. | ||||||||||||||
