Michelle Williams delivers a powerfully unadorned performance as Wendy, a single young woman heading off to find work in Alaska in a used car with only her dog for company and a dwindling cash reserve, in Kelly Reichardt's quietly intimate drama. It's not a road movie, it's a detour: Her journey is sidetracked when her car breaks down in Oregon and her dog goes missing. Photographed with a disarming directness and seeming simplicity that reverberates with the precariousness of her situation, it's tender, tough and uncompromising. Reichardt offers a very different kind of survival take built upon the everyday details of living in the modern world as experienced by a person living on the edge. The supplements on this disc are bit unusual: four experimental short films by members of the film faculty at Bard College and curated by director Reichardt.
