R,1hr 46min Genre: Released: August 13, 2008 Director: Distributor: DreamWorks/Paramount Studios Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Ben Stiller lampoons the self-important Vietnam movie in his crazed comedy of ego-bloated Hollywood actors lost in the jungle and tangling with an adolescent drug lord. Robert Downey Jr. is the surgically pigmented method actor of the cast, and Jack Black, Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson fill out the platoon that couldn't shoot straight. The theatrical, R-rated version is available in a single-disc edition with cast commentary by Stiller, Black and Downey. (Remember the line "I don't drop character 'til I done the DVD commentary"? Apparently it's true.) Also includes a collection of featurettes and the "Tropic Thunder" short from the MTV Movie Awards that'll make your head explode. A director's cut (running more than 10 minutes longer) is on the two-disc special edition DVD and Blu-ray version, which also features filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and "Rain of Madness," a "Hearts of Darkness"-like mockumentary starring Justin Theroux as faux-Werner Herzog documentarian (complete with narration in a mock German lilt). Brilliant. DVD Detailed Information | ||||||||||||||
