Brazil's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar is the story of a 12-year-old boy, Mauro (Michel Joelsas), in 1970 São Paulo, a time of political turbulence (the country is ruled by a military dictatorship) and social frenzy over the national team's success in the World Cup finals. Mauro doesn't know much about politics, but his parents are deeply involved left-wing activists, and his life is turned inside out when they go underground. He's left in the care of a kindly stranger in a lower-middle-class neighborhood filled with colorful characters from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. What binds these people, besides community, is soccer, and they all gather to watch national sports star Pelé lead the Brazilian team to the 1970 World Cup championship. The disc features bonus interviews, extended scenes and outtakes, and a featurette, all (like the movie) in Portuguese with English subtitles.
