John August's "The Nines" plays like an all-grown-up version of August's "Go" -- another intertwined triptych of tales with characters and catchphrases overlapping from one to the next," writes Associated Press critic Christy Lemire. Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis and Melissa McCarthy portray different characters in this trilogy set in the social jungle of the Los Angeles entertainment industry. Reynolds plays a volatile actor in the first, a frustrated TV writer in the second, and a video game designer hiking in the Hollywood Hills with his family in the third. It's not just the setting that carries from one story to another, it's the atmosphere of paranoia and mercenary dealings, and the feeling that their fates are somehow in the hands of another. "The meaning and the ending ... are wildly open for interpretation," Lemire adds, and "it will leave you scratching your head at the metaphysical leaps it takes." Director August contributes two commentary tracks (one with Reynolds, the other with editor Douglas Crise and co-star McCarthy) and the bonus short film "God" (with optional commentary). Also includes the featurette "Summing Up the Nines," deleted scenes, an alternate ending, script-to-storyboard-to-screen comparisons, and other supplements.
