The Lucky Ones

Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Peña play Iraq war vets on leave stateside who hit the road in a rented car in Neil Burger's meandering road movie. Burger is more interested in their easygoing camaraderie and the culture of their trip than political debate or confrontational scenes. We get a snapshot of attitudes seen out the window of their car in a lazy tour of the heartland, and Burger's matter-of-fact direction is refreshing if not exactly dramatically involving. His heart's in the right place but he never gets under their skins. The accompanying 15-minute "A Look Inside: The Lucky Ones" is a typical self-promotional featurette masquerading as a making-of piece.
