This bouncy, upbeat 1967 musical was the last genuine animated classic out of Disney for decades. More inspired by than based on Rudyard Kipling's classic, it's a colorful wild-boy fantasy full of dynamic characters. Little jungle boy Mowgli is a primal Peter Pan raised by a fun-loving bear (voiced by Phil Harris) and a responsible panther (Sebastian Cabot) who just wants to return him to the man village before tiger Shere Khan (George Sanders) kills him. The voice cast also includes Louis Prima (as swinging King Louie), Sterling Holloway, J. Pat O'Malley and Clint Howard. It's the latest film in the Disney library to get the "Platinum Edition" treatment, which pulls out goodies from the vault along with new supplements and interactive activities and games, all very smoothly engineered for easy access. The two-disc set features commentary from original animators Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston and director Wolfgang Reitherman alongside contemporary animated director Brad Bird and others, the all-new 46-minute documentary "The Bare Necessities: The Making of The Jungle Book" plus shorter featurettes and new interviews, archival footage, storyboards of a deleted scene, and deleted songs among its supplements.
