Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Zak Penn's mockumentary profiles the "second most famous" poker tournament in America and the oddball players who compete. Woody Harrelson centers the story as a recovering addict and dazed casino owner on the verge of bankruptcy, and his competition includes a borderline autistic, obsessive-compulsive human calculator (Chris Parnell); a bigoted old-school player (Dennis Farina); a sassy middle-class mother of two (Cheryl Hines) with a mouth like a sailor; and a grinning idiot (Richard Kind) who wanders his way through winning hands like a lucky tourist. While not a grand slam comedy, the offbeat humor and easy byplay gives "The Grand" a winning hand. David Cross, Jason Alexander, Ray Romano, Michael McKean, Hank Azaria, Gabe Kaplan and Werner Herzog co-star. Features commentary by writer/director Penn with co-writer/executive producer Matt Bierman and actor Michael Karnow, plus select scene commentary by Penn with actors, and deleted scenes with optional commentary, very little of which is very illuminating. Also includes alternate endings, deleted scenes and character profiles. | ||||||||||||||
