R,2hrs 6min Released: April 1, 2005 Directors: Distributor: Dimension Films Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies (Note: This review refers to the Blu-ray version of the DVD.) Robert Rodriguez teamed up with comic book legend Frank Miller to translate three of his "Sin City" books – the most graphic of graphic novels – from two-dimensional pages to free-floating big-screen action. The result is hardboiled fiction on steroids and scotch, a B-movie pastiche of the most naively macho extremes of brutal pulp fiction lovingly rendered in harsh black and white with flourishes of color. Rodriguez reworked the film into an extended version that separates and expands the stories in four separate films (the three original graphic novels plus the framing story) with bonus footage unseen in the theatrical version. The Blu-ray debut features both the theatrical and extended unrated version, along with two commentary tracks, an all-green-screen version of the film (the actors shot on the bare green sets without the computer-generated backdrops), Rodriguez's informal, practical, information-packed "15 Minute Flick School," and a dozen or so bonus featurettes among the supplements. | ||||||||||||||
