Mark Wahlberg is Bob Lee Swagger, a former military sniper and disillusioned patriot hiding out in backwoods seclusion when he is called back into service, ostensibly for the good of the country but in fact to play patsy in an assassination plot with echoes of Kennedy. Swagger has been cast in the Lee Harvey Oswald role, but he has other ideas and declares a one-man war on the corrupt shadow government pulling the strings. His motivation? "They killed my dog." Antoine Fuqua directs with the usual chaotic overkill and mix-master editing, pumping up the action choreography until it's as incomprehensible as the story. Wahlberg is suitably outraged as the all-American patriot who takes back his self-respect and his reputation one kill at a time, while Danny Glover is nicely cool as the head conspirator. Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Elias Koteas and Ned Beatty co-star. The DVD features commentary by director Fuqua, the 21-minute featurette "Survival of the Fittest: The Making of 'Shooter'" (it's all about the guns and the explosions), and seven deleted scenes among the supplements. Available in separate wide-screen and full-creen editions and in HD-DVD format.
