R,2hrs 25min Released: May 30, 2008 Director: Distributor: Warner Bros. Pictures Starring: DVD Review by Sean Axmaker, Special to MSN Movies Yes, the absolutely fabulous quartet of Manhattan gal pals -- writer and sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker); nice girl and eternal romantic Charlotte (Kristin Davis); hard-edged Miranda (Cynthia Nixon); and wild, sexually voracious party girl Samantha (Kim Cattrall) -- hit the big screen in this feature film spin-off of the hit HBO comedy. It has been four years since the show left HBO, and guess what? Carrie is still struggling with her on-again/off-again relationship with "Mr. Big" (Chris Noth). David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Jason Lewis and Willie Garson also return, and new to the cast are Candice Bergen and Jennifer Hudson, the latter as Carrie's new assistant (and, yes, she gets a song). "For a series so steeped in romance, the eagerly awaited 'Sex and the City' movie feels a trifle half-hearted," writes Variety critic Brian Lowry. "Without giving away too much regarding the story, one theme explores the boundaries of forgiveness -- a touch ironic for a romantic comedy that commits the near-irredeemable sin of stretching to nearly 2½ hours." For the extended version on the two-disc and Blu-ray editions of the film, it runs even longer (by a few minutes). The single-disc edition comes in either wide-screen or full-screen format and features commentary by writer/director Michael Patrick King. The two-disc and Blu-ray editions also feature deleted scenes, the featurettes "A Conversation With Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King" and "The Fashion of Sex and the City," and a behind-the-scenes look with Fergie recording the song "Labels or Love" for the soundtrack.
